Liturgy Liturgy is official, public, communal worship Official – It is managed by the Church Public – It is a sign of faith Communal – It is done with others Liturgia, Greek meaning “service on behalf of the people” – God does liturgy and we participate in it

Terms… The (Sacred) Liturgy – refers to the Church’s official worship A Liturgy – refers to a specific Mass Liturgical Ritual – refers to order and form of a Mass

Liturgical Roles Celebrant – the person who officiates a liturgical celebration Bishops, Priests, and Deacons preside over sacramental liturgies Act In Persona Christi Laity (Lay Persons), baptized believers who participate in the Liturgy Serve as ministers at Mass

Trinity and the Liturgy The Liturgy is Trinity-centered Begin with the “Sign of the Cross” End with a Trinitarian Blessing

Trinity- Father The Father is the source of all blessings Holy Scripture – readings and Psalms Recalling Salvation History The Father gave us the Son

Trinity - Son Mass & Church are sacraments b/c through them God dispenses grace Eucharist The assembly of believers makes up the body of Christ Christ is the Word of God – Scripture

Trinity - Spirit The Holy Spirit reveals Christ’s presence to the believers It is the Holy Spirit that makes the Mass Sacramental – Making the Saving power of the living Christ available

The Liturgical Year The Liturgical year marks the important events in Christ's life Incarnation, Birth, Life, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ Gives glory to Mary and saints who lived and suffered for Christ Arranged around weeks beginning on Sundays

Liturgical Diversity The Church designs liturgies that reflect the cultures of its believers Western Rites: Roman/Latin, Anglican Use (1980), Marxarabic (Spain/Portugal) Ambrosian (Milan), Bragan (Portugal), Dominican, Carmelite, & Carthusian Eastern/Byzantine Rites: Alexandrian (Coptic & Ethiopian), Armeaian, Byzantine (Greek/Slavic), East & West Syrian (Middle Eastern, Persian, and India), 23 all together
