Tang & Song Timeline Today you will create a timeline that contains the events, rulers and accomplishments listed on your handout Use Chapter 12 Section 1 to find the information for your summaries.

Take out a piece of paper and title it the “Tang and Song Dynasties”

Chinese Dynasties you should now know. ► Zhou ► Qin ► Han ► Tang 618-907 ► Song

After the Han ► It is the Tang dynasty under Tang Taizong who gains power and expands the empire. ► Wu Zhao – only female to become Emperor of China

The old is new again ► Tang China brought back many ideas from the Qin and the Han that had worked before. ► Exam system-brought back to allow all people the opportunity to work in civil service/government ► Confucianism-brought back as a way to guide the government.

New Ideas ► Buddhism makes its way to China from India. ► At first it is widely accepted and many people support the building of monastaries ► A new form of Buddhism is created in China that also brought ideas from Daoism. It is called Zen Buddhism ► Later Tang emperors rebel against Buddhism as not being Chinese.

Inventions Under the Tang ► During the Tang Dynasty, gunpowder was invented. Don ’ t get too excited. At this point they only knew how to make firecrackers. Under the Song they will understand how to use its destructive force. ► Depending on whom you listen to (reliable sources?) porcelain was created during the Tang dynasty. Song Technology ► Movable Type – 1 st printer that arranged blocks of characters on a frame to make up a page for printing. ► Magnetic Compass – always points north- south helped Song expanded trade to the sea.

Song Agriculture ► Increase of population due to advances in farming. ► Used fast ripening rice from Vietnam which allowed them to harvest 2 rice crops a year.

Golden Age of Art ► Due to an increase of wealth through trade, education, & urban (city) culture this allowed for artistic creativity. ► Paintings emphasized Daoism though natural landscapes and objects like a branch or flower ► Artist used black ink instead of colored ink.

Song Social Changes ► Landowning aristocratic families faded ► People moved to cities because of the availability of jobs

Status of Women ► ► Women never held high status in Chinese society. ► ► During Tang/Song it dropped further, more so in the upper class society than lower. ► ► Feet binding-feet tied together eventually broke the arches and curled the big toe under the foot. ► ► Lily-foot ► ► Made women beautiful but impractical- status.
