© 2008 America’s Digital Schools 2008, The Greaves Group, The Hayes Connection Definition of LMS There are two broad groups of Learning Management Systems: 'closed' and 'open'. A 'closed' system imbeds content into the system: content is limited to that supplied by the LMS provider and is, generally, the older type of system. An 'open' system can serve content from multiple providers. An example of a 'closed' system would be Plato Learning; an example of an 'open' system would be Blackboard. Hybrid systems, incorporating features from both current types of systems, may be created in the future.
