Solutions Integrated Science
2
Solutions Solutions are a type of Homogeneous Mixture – The whole solution looks the same. – You can’t see any of the individual parts.
3
Solutions Solutions have two parts – Solute The substance that is dissolved – Solvent The substance that dissolves the solute. + =
4
Solutions In homogeneous mixtures all of the parts are the same state of matter. – This means that AFTER you make the solution you only have one state of matter.
5
Pick the Solute and Solvent Salt Water – Solute = salt – Solvent = water Kool Aid – Solute = Kool Aid or Sugar – Solvent = water Tomato Soup – Solute = tomato – Solvent = water Salad – Solute = tomato? – Solvent = lettuce
6
Solutions Solutions are classified by the amount of solute in the solvent – Unsaturated When more solute can be dissolved in the solvent. – Saturated When no more solute can be dissolved in the solvent. – Super Saturated When the solvent is heated to have solute dissolved in it.

Why do we put salt on icy sidewalks Salt lowers the melting point so the ice melts. Pure water freezes at 0°C salt water freezes below 0…-5°C That means that if it is warmer than -5° the ice will melt.
8
Why do we put salt in water Salt raises the boiling point so the water is hotter and it cooks the pasta faster. Pure water boils at 100°C salt water boils above 100…105°C That means that the water is hotter when it boils so the pasta cooks faster.
