Aim: To understand the location of global threatened biodiversity D ISTRIBUTION OF BIODIVERSITY UNDER THREAT
2
R ECAP : H OTSPOTS Name the location of some ecosystem hotspots But what is a hotspot? An area containing a huge number of species, a large percentage which are endemic
4
S TATUS OF TERRESTRIAL ECO - REGIONS
5
TASK Compare the two maps together; answer the following questions: 1. Is there a pattern between the two maps? 2. Describe the ‘status of terrestrial eco-regions map’.
6
S AMPLE DESCRIPTION The broad latitudinal spread of these suggests that ecosystems of a wide diversity are involved. The ‘vulnerable’ category seems to account for roughly the same areas as the ‘critical and endangered’. It too shows a wide latitudinal spread. Further threats to these ‘vulnerable’ eco-regions could easily push them into the ranks of the ‘critical and endangered’.

B IOME L OSS
8
TASK Use the biome loss and projected loss chart to answer the following questions: 1. Describe what has happened? 2. Describe the projected threats to the biomes? What pattern do you notice?
9
F ACTORS THAT THREATEN BIODIVERSITY
10
P OTENTIAL THREATS ??? Threats to Biodiversity H______________ C__________ O_____ - E______________ C________ C__________ I_____________ S_____________ P_______________ D_____________
12
TASK Using the handout answer the following question: What are the global threats to biodiversity and how have these impacted biodiversity?
13
H OMEWORK 1. Produce a spider diagram identifying threats to a named hotspot e.g. Galapagos 2. Then, highlight the local and global threats to your chosen ecosystem
