Energy Conservation: Webinar 1 Rev. Fletcher Harper, Stacey Kennealy, Steve Bell

Housekeeping  Everyone will be on mute until Q&A  If you experience technical problems: 1-866-863-3910  If slide transition fails, logoff online and try again (but stay on the phone line)  You will receive recording & PowerPoint

Agenda  Welcome  Introduction to energy conservation series  Introduction to GreenFaith  Why conserve energy?  The foundation: process and content steps  People  Temperature control  Appliances  Additional resources

Welcome! GreenFaith’s Executive Director Rev. Fletcher Harper GreenFaith Certification Program & Sustainability Director Stacey Kennealy Lead technical support contractor for the ENERGY STAR Congregations program Steve Bell

Introduction to Energy Conservation Series  3-part series  Part 1 : Introduction, people, temperature control, appliances.  Part 2 : Lighting, weather stripping & insulation, success stories.  Part 3: Overview of the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool.  Recommendations based on energy audits, experience, well researched best practices

GreenFaith’s Mission  Educate, inspire, mobilize  Spirit, Stewardship, Justice  Leadership training – Fellowship and Certification  A ‘one stop shop’ for religious-environmental activities  www.greenfaith.org www.greenfaith.org

Why Conserve Energy  Reduce operating expenses without reducing programs or services  Sustainable savings  Management “best practice”  The environmental link – climate change

The Foundation: Process and Content  Technological vs. human “fixes”  Both vital  Start with people  Culture of wise energy use  Public and accountable  Beware complex technology without committed leadership

High Priority Actions  3 Categories:  People  Temperature control  Appliances

Priority Action #1 - People Develop an Institutional Commitment  Designate an Energy Steward & Team  Declare intention publicly  Tip: Pass a Governing Board Resolution  Cost: $0  Payback: Ongoing

Priority Action #2: People Develop a Baseline & Ongoing Records  Chart your energy use for the past 2 years  Portfolio Manager tool  Tip: appoint one leader to coordinate  Cost: 2-3 hours setup, 2 hours/year  Payback: Immediate, both with motivation and education opportunities.

Priority Action #3 – Temperature Control Install Programmable Thermostats & Increase Setbacks  7 day programmable, multiple settings  45 degrees/90 degrees possible in infrequently used spaces  Tip: Program monthly  Cost: $70 per thermostat  Payback: 6 months or less – often quicker

Priority Action #4 - Temperature Control Tune boiler/furnace/HVAC for optimal efficiency  Change/clean filters regularly  Tip: If you have an annual contract, there should be no additional charge for this  Cost: Depends on size of facility and equipment  Payback: 8 months or less – often quicker

Priority Action #5 - Appliances Use Energy-Efficient Equipment  Look for Energy Star rating  Cost : Small differential  Payback: Differs depending on equipment.  Tip: Rebates often available: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=rebate.rebate_locator

Priority Action #6 - Appliances Replace/Consolidate Refrigerators  Refrigerator standards changed in 1991, then again in 2001  Cost for Refrigerators : $450  Payback: 5 years, on average

Priority Action #7 - Appliances Turn unused equipment off or down  Myth: It’s better to leave lights and equipment on because it takes extra energy to start them  Water heaters – vacation mode  Tips: Standby mode, power strip  Cost: $0  Payback: Can be substantial if lighting is routinely left on, or with large water heaters

Review: High Priority Actions  Make Institutional Commitment  Establish baseline and monitor  Install Programmable Thermostats & Increase Temperature Setbacks  Tune Boiler/Furnace  Use ENERGY STAR Equipment  Replace/consolidate refrigerators  Turn unused equipment off or down

Additional Resources  Read ‘Putting Energy into Stewardship’ - http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=congregations_ guidebook.congregations_guidebook http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=congregations_ guidebook.congregations_guidebook  US EPA Portfolio Manager - https://www.energystar.gov/istar/pmpam/ https://www.energystar.gov/istar/pmpam/  GreenFaith website energy conservation resources – http://greenfaith.org/resource- center/stewardship/energy-conservation http://greenfaith.org/resource- center/stewardship/energy-conservation  Next 2 webinars: October 17 th, 24 th
