1 MUSCLES

2 MUSCLES 1. There are over 600 muscles in the body.
2. All muscles contract (shorten) only 3. There are 3 kinds of muscles

3 Three Kinds of Muscle

4 SKELETAL MUSCLES 1. Connects to bones… causes them to move
2. Also called banded or striated muscle 3. Also called voluntary muscles .. You make them move 4. These muscles react quickly and tire quickly

5 Movement When your muscle contracts (shortens) it pulls on the tendon, which pulls on your bone and they move together

6 Tendon vs. Ligament

7 The biceps are the flexor
The triceps are the extensor

8 SMOOTH MUSCLE 1. Does not have bands
2. They contract without you thinking about it 3. Also called involuntary muscle 4. Controls breathing, blood pressure and digestion 5. Reacts slowly and tires slowly

9 CARDIAC MUSCLE 1. Only found in the heart 2. Muscle fibers form mesh
3. Do not tire out

10 Voluntary vs. Involuntary
Under your control Skeletal Muscle Ex: bicep Not under your control Smooth & cardiac Ex: stomach muscles Some muscles can be both, like your eye muscles

11 Summary types of muscles
Description Found Voluntary or involuntary Skeletal muscle Moves bones Arms, legs voluntary Cardiac Never gets tired Heart Involuntary Smooth Organs Intestine, stomach

12 Exercise Resistance Exercise Strengthen skeletal muscles
Work against the resistance, or weight, of an object Example: Curl-ups

13 Exercise Aerobic Exercise Steady, moderately intense activity
Increase muscle strength (mostly the heart) Increases endurance Example: Swimming

14 Muscle Injury Types of injuries
Strain: muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn Tendinitis: inflamed tendon due to strenuous exercise Anabolic Steroids Can cause long-term health problems Heart, liver and kidneys High blood pressure Before maturity, can stunt bone growth
