AMERICAN FOOTBALL IS A HIGH CONTACT SPORT, SAFETY FOR YOU & YOUR OPPONENTS IS PARAMOUNT DO NOT USE YOUR HEAD TO BUTT BLOCK OR SPEAR ANY OPPONENT, THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND WILL CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO YOUR HEAD & NECK IT IS ALSO TOTALLY FORBIDDEN BY THE RULES “KEEP YOUR HEAD OUT OF FOOTBALL” IMPORTANT RUN BLOCKING TECHNIQUES Your Stance should be comfortable, fundamentally sound & balanced, to enable you to move in all four directions (forward, backward, left, right). Good communication with other Linemen is vital. Get “Off The Ball”. Your speed into your block at the snap of the ball is the difference between winning or losing your assignment. Do not stand up, stay low in a good blocking stance & don’t open up too early. Know your assignment on every play & “Make the Block”, do not hesitate. Maintain your block until the whistle has blown the play dead, do not ball watch. PLAYER TERMINOLOGY C = Centre - Lineman who snaps the ball into play. G = Guard - Interior Linemen play directly on either side of Centre & inside Tackles. T = Tackle - Exterior Linemen play on either sides of the Guards QB = Quarterback - Play-caller, Takes snap from Centre, then either “hands off” to a back, passes the ball to a back or receiver, or runs with the ball himself F = Fullback - Running Back (normally bigger of the 2 backs), can run with ball, blocking back, or receive a pass. H = Halfback - Running Back, can run with the ball, blocking back, or receive a pass. X = Wide Receiver – Fast pass catching specialist, can also run the ball. Y = Tight End / Wide Receiver - Mix between a lineman & pass receiver, play on either side of Tackles or out wide. Z = Wingback / Slot Receiver – Fast pass catching specialist, can also run the ball. “SAFETY FIRST”

THE HUDDLE The Center will call the huddle 10 yards behind the Ball with his back to the ball. The Guards and Tackles will form a half circle shoulder to shoulder on the Center as indicated in the diagram on the right. H, F, Z, Y, Z will form the second half of the circle, leaving a gap to allow the QB to enter the huddle from our sideline, as indicated in the diagram. Players must get to the huddle quickly and when the QB enters the huddle keep quiet, the only voice in the huddle should be the QB to call the play. When the huddle breaks, all players must run to the Line of Scrimmage and set up immediately in their stance. Setting up quickly allows the QB time to read the Defense and decide if an audible is necessary Y ZH F QB TT GG C 10 Yds Ball X GCGT Z YT “HOLE” NUMBERING & NORMAL LINE “SPLITS” The “normal line splits” for Offensive Linemen is 3 feet The “normal line Split” for Tight End/s is 3 feet, but he can vary his “split” up to 5 feet dependant on the play called & Defensive alignment 1 2 3 4 6 8 7 5 THE RUNNING ATTACK The run attack uses a letter followed by number to designate who will carry the ball and where the point of attack will be. Run plays are called as: Letter – Number – Type of Run. The Letter designates the ball carrier, the number the point of attack (POA), and the type of run describes the play BALL CARRIERS The ball-carrier will always be identified by letter, the Quarterback is always Q, the Fullback is F, the Halfback is H, The T.End is Y, and the Receiver’s are X & Z RUNNING PLAY TERMINOLOGY Dive = Ball-carrier with no lead blocker Lead = Ball-carrier with 1 lead blocker Power = Ball-carrier with 2 lead blockers Counter = Misdirection play with RB counter stepping opposite direction of run Sweep = Outside Run Option = 3 way option of Fullback Dive/QB run/Halfback run Trap = Inside run with pulling linemen Reverse = Run ball in 1 direction, hand off & reverse direction of run POINT OF ATTACK Even numbers right and odd numbers left, with the lowest numbers to the Center. 0 (Zero) is directly over the Center. 2 is between the Center and Guard on the right side (Irrespective of quick or strong). 4 is between Guard and Tackle to the right side etc. Consequently higher numbers are in the gaps between each player along the offensive line, hence the POA is often referred to as ‘the hole’ 0 The Offensive Huddle

Base Formation Run Plays “Twins” = Formation “Left” = Twins (X, Z) Position “Z Rex” = Motion to be run (if called) “H3” = Ball Carrier & Point of Attack “Lead” = Type of Play/Run “On 2” = Snap Count PLAY CALLING IN THE HUDDLE The Quarterback will wait for the play call then step into the huddle. The call is made in the following formats: Play Calling Base Formation Pass Plays “Twins” = Formation “Left” = Twins (X, Z) Position “Z Rex” = Motion to be run (if called) “8-7-1” = Pass patterns to be run (X, Y, Z) “H Swing” = RB pattern (if called) “60” = Pass Protection “On 2” = Snap Count “Jumbo” Plays “Jumbo Right”= Position of the F, Z & H in backfield. “H6”= Ball Carrier & Point of Attack “Power”= Type of Play/Run “On 2”= Snap Count (“hut, hut”) Note: Misdirection should always be run on leads, dive and counters The Quarterback will call the play twice then say ‘Ready’ and the huddle will “break” with a clap of the hands. AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE Offensive Lineman adopt three point stance immediately they reach the L.O.S. If the Tight End is “tight” adopt 3 point stance on “Down”. RB’s adopt stance on “Down” CADENCE The cadence will be “Down” - “Colour number” - “Colour number” - “Set” - “ hut…hut…” BASE FORMATIONS In our “Base Formation” there are at least 3 wide receivers (X, Y & Z) and 2 Running Backs (F & H). The Formations are called by name, the term “left” or “right” designates which side of the Offensive Line the twin receivers, X & Z line up on (e.g. “Twins Left” tells X & Z to line up on left side of OL). The Tight End (Y) always lines up on the opposite side to the Twins. (e.g. “Twins Left” tells Y to line up on right hand side of OL). The “split” distance from the Tackle will vary according to the play called. If “Twins Left Tight” is called, the Tight End (Y) lines up 3 feet outside Right Tackle, in 3 point stance. The Wingback (Z) normally lines up the same side of the X “1 yard off” the line of scrimmage. The Z man can line up either side of the OL, but must always be “1 yard off” the Line Of Scrimmage. The “split” distance from the Tackle or T.End will vary according to the play called. There are 3 specific “splits” for X, Y & Z for each side of the offence line – RIP, REX, RON for the right, LIZ, LEX, LOU for the left. The first and second letter of each call signifies where the player should line up: RIP = right inside, REX right evens, RON = right outside RIP = 3 to 4 yards outside of Tackle REX = ½ way between Tackle and sideline RON = 5 yards from the sideline Note: If no specific position for X,Y & Z is called in the huddle, Line up in LEX & REX as a rule, but you can vary it according to the play called and to confuse the Defence
5
Audibles: Audibles are called by the QB if the defense are in a position to disrupt the initial play call. Likely situations are when the defense have stacked a number of players over the hole which a running play was called to go through or if the QB reads a blitz on a passing play. The QB will be very vocal on the line, pointing out potential blitzes and helping linemen to identify their blocks. Listen and take note of the calls if they apply to you. Audibles will be called by first identifying the main affected player, eg Z or F, then calling “check” and an instruction in the form of a number. The instruction called will be dependent on the type of play called and are as follows: 30 numbers mean that the player called out will be running the ball, the second digit in the number called will signify the hole they will run through. e.g. “F Check 32” This means that the Full back will be running through the 2 hole on a dive 80 numbers will be called on passing plays, the second digit will signify the new pattern from the passing tree that the player is to run. If “Hold” is called after an 80 number, the player will NOT be running a passing play, this is a signal for the player to remain in the backfield and block. e.g. “Y check 82” This means the Y receiver will run a 2 pattern e.g. “H check 80 hold” This means the H back will stay in the backfield and pass block. Shifts: When a shift is called, the offense sets up showing the defense one formation, then quickly changes to another formation in an attempt to confuse the defense. The shift must be performed quickly to have the desired effect. A shift will be called as follows: “Twins Left shift Spread Left – 2-1-3-2- 60 on 1” Move quickly from the huddle and set up in Twins Left, when the QB calls shift, move and sprint to your new position into Spread and set quickly, waiting for the cadence. MOTION : Motion by any of the backfield players (F, H, Z, & Y if “off the LOS”) is used to disrupt Defences & could indicate whether the Defence are playing “Man” or “Zone” coverage. It will also change the formation of the Offence before the “snap” of the ball, forcing the Defence to react, which will keep them off balance. NOTE : ONLY 1 MAN CAN BE IN MOTION AT ANY ONE TIME. NOTE : MOTION MUST BE PARRALLEL TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE BEFORE THE SNAP OF THE BALL Motion is designated by calling a players code letter and the point to which he is to move to by the snap of the ball. The direction & final position of the player in motion is defined by name, final position is position of the player at the “snap” of the ball Motion to the left of the Offence= LIZ, LEX, LOU. Motion to the right of the Offence= RIP, REX, RON. The player & the motion required will be called as the second part of the play call, as shown below (Z LEX & H RON is the motion call) Play call = TWIN LEFT TIGHT – Z LEX – H3 LEAD – ON 2 Play call = TWINS RIGHT – H RON – F2 DIVE – ON 1 The motion is initiated by the QB lifting his foot, usually after “Down” in the play call. Jog the first part of the motion and then once you get behind the OL sprint from then on. If you cannot hear the snap count once you have crossed over the Centre, watch the “X” or “Y” receivers & do not turn “upfield” until he moves. BLOCKING DEFINITIONS AND RULES POA - Point Of Attack (ie the hole number) P/S - Playside B/S - Backside The definition of the position of man to be blocked is relevant to each blocker and the POA. ON - Is a man within 1 yard of the LOS who is covering or shading the blocker. GAP - Is a man within 1 yard of the LOS in the POA hole or the gap towards the POA for each blocker. OUT - Is a man within 1 yard of the LOS who is ‘ON’ the next blocker to the outside (this may be across the POA) DOWN - Is a man within 1 yard of the LOS who is ‘ON’ the next blocker to the inside (this may be across the POA) AWAY - Is a man who is in the away gap or over the away gap. Blocker takes nearest man to LOS in this area. OVER - Is a man off the LOS who is covering or shading the blocker or is over the blockers ‘GAP’ LB INSIDE - Is the first LB to the inside of the POA (he may actually be ‘backside’) BLOCK TYPES GOOA - GAP/ON/OVER/AWAY GIL - GAP/IN/LINEBACKER STALK - A Wide Receiver block. Try to push the defender as deep as possible by faking a deep pass route. As soon as the defender reads run and breaks down, get in front of him and stop him getting to the ball carrier. CROSS - Two adjacent lineman (Usually the Guard and Tackle) who swap and block the man ON or OVER the other. Inside Lineman always pull behind the outside man. The Crossblock is always made across the POA. DOWNFIELD - Release across the field towards the far hashmark and use common sense if runner breaks free or cuts back COMBO - A block made by two adjacent lineman against a Defensive Lineman and a Linebacker. Initially both O Lineman block the Defensive Lineman but they keep their eyes on the Linebacker. As soon as he moves left or right, the Offensive Lineman to that side slips off and blocks him. PAL - ‘Pull and Lead’. Pull to the POA and lead block GEE - Pull outside and kick-out the first defender to show (usually the DE) B/SP/S POA Definition for P/S Guard with B as POA INGAP OVER ONOUT AWAY POA Definition for P/S Guard with A as POA POA OUT AWAYLB INSIDE GAP OVER ONIN Definition for P/S Guard with A as POA POA OUT AWAYLB INSIDE GAP OVER ONIN Offensive Line Blocking

50 PROTECTION 50 series designates ‘Quick’ protection for short passes (The QB will take 1-3 drop steps). Blockers must attack their assignment, hit him low and keep his hands down. Offensive Line - Zone Block inside gap, get hands of DL down. -Center : Block On to Over. If you have no rusher directly in front of you then help the next man to weak-side but stay alert for rusher through your area. Do not pop-up or step back! Even if you have no one to block, keep low and out of the QB’s vision. -Guards : Block Inside to Over, be aware of blitzing LB’s -Tackles: Block Inside to Over to Outside. Do not get beat inside. Take one step to get to a wide Defensive End but you must then attack him low. Do not allow him to stand up tall in the QB’s throwing lane. -Running Backs: Cut block the most dangerous man, over to outside of the Tackle. F to take Strongside, H to take Weakside. -Look Inside to Outside to be aware of any inside blitz not picked up by Linemen. If Tackle to your side is covered and there is another rusher outside of him – that is your man. -For single back sets (Black, Bunch) H always looks for biggest threat. The Running Backs will look Inside Out for any rushing LB’s. Normally used for 5 & 7 step drop passes & when in single Running Back Formation. If “hold” is called, OL cannot retreat and must maintain their ground at the LOS. Offensive Line Linemen block D Linemen Centre: Block On to Over, if uncovered check Strong-side LB. Guards: Block On to Over, if uncovered check LB to DE. Tackles: Block On to Outside, do not get beat inside. Running Backs: Check LB to first man outside Tackle, release after checking off. 81 & 82 PROTECTION 81 & 82 pass protection is used for QB roll out passes. 81 – Roll out Left. 82 – Roll out Right. Diagrams shown are 82 roll out, 81 is a mirror image. NOTE : The Linemen will use a combination of Hinge block & Reach block for the roll out pass. The RB’s will block roll out side, unless told to check backside. Offensive Line -Basic assignment is – Onside Reach to the call side gap, Backside Hinge & retreat. -Centre: Reach block play-side if covered & Hinge block if uncovered. -Guards: Backside Hinge block, Play-side Reach Block. -Tackles: Backside Hinge block, Play-side Reach Block. Running Backs. Block end man to play-side. If 2 backs are in, one of them may be called to check back-side pursuit, dependant on Defensive alignment & rush. THE PASSING ATTACK Pass routes for the WR’s & T.End’s in “Base Formations” are numbered 0 – 9 and also named, we may use a combination of both when calling the plays but predominately we will use the numbering system for “Base Formations” & names for “Bunch Attack” All Wide Receivers start from a 2 point stance with inside foot back. T. Ends start from a 3 point stance, and a 2 point if split wide. For pass plays in “Base Formations” the routes to be run are called in order of X, Y, Z, irrespective of formation. The Running Back/s routes are called by name. The route to be run & which back will run it will be called after the pass protection call & before the “snap count”.
