1
Chemistry of Cigarette Smoke Define secondhand smoke. Chem. Catalyst-Day 2
2
Exposure to these chemicals occurs whenever a tobacco product is burned. Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 compounds. some are carcinogenic: arsenic (lung cancer), benzene (leukemia), vinyl chloride (liver, brain cancer) β-napthalamine & 4- aminobiphenyl (bladder cancer) Fatemeh Mizbani The Firsthand Exposure
3
Experimentation Experimentation and Methods Sample collection in the field or at smoking chamber, using various devices such as TP-ETS sampler Identification of compounds using Gas Chromatography NPD or GC-Ion trap mass-mass spectroscopy Analysis using data and chemistry knowledge of the scientists.
4
Gas chromatography (GC) Gas chromatography (GC), is a common type of chromatography used in analytic chemistry for separating and analyzing compounds that can be vaporized without decompositionchromatographyanalytic chemistryseparatingvaporizeddecomposition GC-IT-MS-MS Spectrometer GC-NPD

Collecting SHS Using Thermopheric Deposition 500mm T = 1600 °K cm -1 22°C 100°C Heater heat sink Interaction between heated gas molecules and SHS (or any small airborne particulate matter) results in a force toward the cooler side and deposition. TP- ETS Sampler Fatemeh Mizbani
6
Analysis of Secondhand Smoke – SHS SHS gases and particles behave differently after smoking. SHS particles (inside the yellow circle) are oily liquid aerosols that contain thousands of compounds Nicotine is found in SHS particles but at much lower concentrations than in the gas phase Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Particle- phase Benzene CO 1,3-Butadiene Formaldehyde Acrolein NO 2 Nicotine PAH Solanesol Benzo(a)pyrene Metals
7
Identification of Gaseous Compounds in SHS

Homework: Collecting THS You will be provided with kim-wipes and a vial of water and soap in a sealed plastic bag. To activate Kim-wipe moisten with soap and water. Wipe a surface exposed to thirdhand smoke with the moist Kim-wipe. Put it back in the sealed bag for tomorrow’s analysis.
