WRITING A COVER LETTER
2
What is a cover letter? A cover letter is a short letter that introduces your resume to the company you are applying to work for. Your cover letter states why you want to work for that company and why you would be good for the position. It offers a 'quick overview' of why you should get the job. It also gives an example of your writing ability and attention to detail. An effective cover letter catches the attention of the reader and makes him or her invite you for an interview.
3
A cover letter should: Explain why you are sending a resume. Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization. Convince the reader to look at your resume. Call attention to elements of your background.
4
A cover letter should: Reflect your attitude, personality, motivation, enthusiasm, and communication skills. Provide or refer to any information specifically requested in the job advertisement. Indicate what you will do to follow-up.
5
Structure of a cover letter
6
First Paragraph State the job you’re applying for. Where you found out about it (advert in newspaper, etc.). When you're available to start work.
7
Second Paragraph Why you're interested in that type of work. Why the company attracts you (if it's a small company say you prefer to work for a small friendly organisation!).
8
Third Paragraph Summarise your strengths and how they might be an advantage to the organisation. Relate your skills to the competencies required in the job.
9
Last Paragraph Mention any dates that you won't be available for interview. Thank the employer and say you look forward to hearing from them soon.

I graduated in Accounting and Finance last July and I believe that I have the necessary credentials for the position. Every holiday for the last five years I have worked at various accounting departments in banks as well as import and export companies. As indicated in my enclosed resume, I have worked as an accountant’s assistant and moved up to in-depth accounting work, and last holiday served as assistant to the head of the accounting department of an important import and export company whose turnover is around CFA F one (1) billion. In addition to this practical experience, I graduated in Bachelor’s in Accounting and Finance at ISIG International, which is, as you may know, one of the few higher education institutions in the country that offers such a highly specialized degree in accounting and Finance. I am confident that my degree, along with my years of practical experience, makes me an excellent candidate for your job. The Songo Company projects are familiar to me, and my aspiration is to work for a company that has your excellent reputation. I would welcome the opportunity of an interview with you. I am available to speak with you at any time and to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Kadidia Diallo Enclosure: A copy of my resume
