3 W HAT BEVERAGES CONTAIN SUGAR ? High amounts of sugar are found in many drinks: Soda Sweet tea Fruit juice Energy drinks Sports drinks Sweetened coffee drinks Flavored milk (chocolate, vanilla, etc.)

4 H OW MUCH SUGAR IS IN YOUR DRINKS ?

5 E MPTY C ALORIES What are empty calories? Answer: Calories in foods that have no nutritional value, or high calories and low vitamin and mineral content. Fruit juice has vitamins/minerals, but also a lot of sugar. Choose 100% fruit juice and limit intake to 1 cup a day for adults and 1/2 cup for children. Eat fruit rather than drink it.

6 S UGARY BEVERAGES CAN CAUSE : Weight gain Cavities An increased risk of type 2 diabetes Caffeinated drinks can disturb sleep, create anxiety and headaches, and cause your body lose calcium.

9 S UGAR B USTERS Get into small groups and create a list of healthier drink options

10 C HALLENGE The average American could lose 11.5 pounds in a year by switching 1.6 sodas with water and 30 pounds if they eliminated 2.6 sodas. Write on a piece of paper your goal to decrease sugary beverage intake.
