College Stress Cheat Sheet due Thursday! Chapter 15 Test- Thursday! Study Guide due then, too! All missing work for this unit due then as well! Goal(s): To be able to explain fear and anxiety. To be able to recognize irrational assumptions. To be able to differentiate among defensive and active coping strategies. 1. Pick up the bell work. 2. Work on the bell work.

* In your notes, do the following: * Finish the statement: * I often worry about ___________________________.

* Now, answer this: * Q1: Is your cause of worry logical or unrealistic? Explain why.

1. When people look at me, they are examining what I do. 2. If I am criticized, it means that I am wrong. 3. If I make a mistake, it means I am stupid. 4. If I don't agree with people, they won't like me. 5. To be a good person, I have to be nice to everyone. 6. If someone is hurt or offended by what I do, this means I am a bad person. 7. If I show emotion, it means that I am weak. 8. People will think that there is something wrong with me if they see that I am anxious. 9. The opinions of other people about me are very important. 10. I am afraid that I look or sound silly to other people. 11. I can tell that people will evaluate me negatively. 12. I have to be very careful about what I say in case I offend someone. 13. Approval is very important to me. 14. Being anxious is a sign of weakness. 15. When people see me behave like this, they will talk badly of me to others.

* Way more true than false answers? You are most likely an anxious person. * Anxious people often imagine that other people are judging them harshly.

* When you are anxious, you tend to think in particular, distorted ways * thinking errors * Thinking the worst, ‘The pain in my chest means there is something wrong with my heart’. * Exaggerating negatives, ‘I made a complete mess of it. It was an absolute disaster’. * Overgeneralizing — if something happens once, you think it will always happen, if you feel anxious at the supermarket checkout, thinking ‘I'm always anxious when I go out’. * All-or-nothing thinking, ‘Unless I do it with no mistakes at all, I have failed’. * Imagining that you know what other people are thinking, ‘I can tell they are thinking what a fool I am’. Anxious People Characteristics

* Now, answer this on there as well: * Q2: Are any of your beliefs irrational or based on societal influences? If so, which one(s)? Explain.

* Now… * Look at figure 15.12 (page 433) * Read about the irrational assumptions and constructive alternatives to them. * Answer the following questions in regards to those assumptions and alternatives you just read about: 1. How does cognitive appraisal (the interpretation of an event that helps determine its stress impact) play a role in how stressed you are? 2. Is it better to feel in control of stressors (situations that cause stress)? Why? 3. How might recognizing your irrational assumptions help you better cope with stress?
