Adams supporters said that this would happen if Jefferson were to be elected: “Murder, robbery, rape, adultery and incest [being] openly taught and practiced, the air will be rent with the cries of the distressed, the soil will be soaked with blood and the nation black with crimes…female chastity violated [with] children writing on a pike.”

6. Jefferson responded: Adams is… "a hideous hermaphroditical character with neither the force and firmness of a man or the gentleness and sensibility of a woman."

9. Jefferson takes off the gloves: Taking advantage of President Adams' foolish Alien & Sedition Acts (a law that essentially tried to make it illegal for people to speak or publish anything negative about the president) Jefferson created the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, in which Jefferson claimed that: “The several States composing the US. Of America are not united on the principle of unlimited submission to their general government…and one of the Amendments to the constitution having also declared, that the powers not delegated to the US. by the constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people, therefore the act of Congress…are altogether void and of no force.”
