Vocabulary Pleura - The lining of the lungs. Pleuritis - Another name for pleurisy. Codeine - A pain medication and cough suppressant.

Background Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleura. The pleura is meant to slide gently past each other. Pleurisy makes breathing, coughing, or sneezing very painful. Usually caused by a virus or bacterial infection. Pleurisy is a symptom of underlying disease.

Causes Viral infection is the most common cause. Ex: Pneumonia and tuberculosis Chest injuries. Drug reactions.

Symptoms Chest pain, especially when breathing. The chest pain may also radiate to the neck or back. Shortness of breath A persistent Cough A raspy sound at the end of exhalation. Only detectable when listening with a stethoscope.

Treatments Antibiotics may be prescribed if an infection is causing pleurisy. Anti-inflammatory drugs. In some cases a codeine based cough suppressant is given to help with the pain. To cure pleurisy you have to find out what underlying disease is causing it.

Conclusion Pleurisy is an inflammation of the lining of the lungs that makes breathing difficult and painful. Pleurisy is a symptom of an underlying disease and to fully cure pleurisy, the underlying disease causing it must be treated as well.
