Quick Start Expectations 1.Fill in planner and HWRS HW: Inv. 3 p. 68-72 #25, 40 (Note: This is Investigation 3!!) 2.Get a signature on HWRS 3.On desk: math journal, HWRS, calculator 4.Warm Up: Cut out your pieces

If so does it fit into the larger triangle? Can you form a rep-tile?
3
Can you form a rep-tile? Yes!
4
Does it fit into the larger triangle? No! Can you figure out the scale factor?

Nested triangles
8
Look at corresponding side lengths : 80 ft. and 140 ft. Find the scale factor: 80 x ? = 140 ft. 140/80 = 1.75 = scale factor Apply scale factor to other side: 120 x 1.75 = 210 ft. 210 – 120 = 90 ft.
9
The perimeter of the larger triangle must be 1.75 times greater than the smaller triangle. Since they are similar, the perimeter grows by the scale factor: 1.75!
10
First place stake 3. Look at tree 1 and have a friend place stake 1 as close to the river as possible, and directly in line with you and tree 1. Repeat for tree 2 and stake 2.
11
Yes, the distance will be the same! The scale factor from the small to the large triangle is 4. So, it is 120 ft. from stake 3 to tree 1. Subtract 30 ft. from 120 ft. to get the same 90 ft. across the river!
