Purpose for Philippians The main purpose of Philippians is Paul’s thankfulness for the recent gift they sent to him through Epaphroditus (4:10-19). Purpose “In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now...” Philippians 1:4,5 He also informs them that Epaphroditus, who had fallen gravely ill has completely recovered (2:25-30). Paul also takes the occasion to deal with internal disunity, and false teachers from the outside (3:2-21).

Summary “In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now...” Philippians 1:4,5 Paul give thanks for their partnership in the gospel (1:1-11). He then informs them that his imprisonment had actually resulted in the advancement of the gospel and that the outcome of his imprisonment is of little matter personally (1:12-26). He exhorts them to endure suffering having the same humble attitude as Jesus (just like Paul’s fellow-workers Timothy and Epaphroditus (1:27-2:30), and warns them against those who teach a gospel of law and not grace and to press on in the Christian life following his example (3:1-4:1). He pleads for the reconciliation of two fellow-workers and closes by again giving thanks for their generosity in the partnership of the gospel (4:2-23).
