SPI 0807.Inq.1 SPI 0807.Inq.2 Science Projects Science Projects SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls) A) Work alone or work in groups of 2 to 4 students C) Work will be done at school in class (with some exceptions) B) Do an experiment with variables, constants, and a control D) Use a project display board, poster, or PowerPoint E) Include labels for the scientific method steps ( see next slide) G) Must include a graph or table with step 4 (analyze data) H) Must do at least three experimental trials (more is better) SPI 0807.Inq.2 (Tools and Procedures) F) Include a summary of your actions with each step Come up with 5 ideas, and I will approve one of them Take pictures and/or video clips as you work. (Include these in your display)

Step 1: Ask a Question Step 2: Form a Hypothesis Step 3: Test the Hypothesis By doing experiments Step 4: Analyze The Results Step 5: Draw Conclusions Step 6: Communicate results Scientific Method Variables, Constants, and Controls Used with the scientific method Use independent variables, dependent variables, constants, and controls when you test your hypothesis by doing experiments (see step 3 above) SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls) Science Projects Science Projects
3
Experiments In an experiment you should conduct multiple trials How many? More is better! Experiments should include independent variables, dependent variables, constants, and controls. SPI 0807.Inq.1 SPI 0807.Inq.2 Science Projects Science Projects

Experiments (F.Y.I): You test or measure a quantity and/or quality of something. Example: Measuring Quantity: Scientists could be testing a new cell phone battery to determine how long it will last when you are text messaging. Example: Measuring Quality: Scientists could be testing new IPod ear buds to determine if they are more comfortable or not. SPI 0807.Inq.1 SPI 0807.Inq.2 Science Projects Science Projects

Day 02: FRI April 29 get approval, create a detailed plan (Include Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How), Determine your independent variable, dependent variables, constants, and controls Day 01: THR April 28 Get in groups, come up with five ideas, get approval 7-Day Schedule Two Phases A) Planning Phase (2 Days) B) Working Phase (5 Days) Planning Phase
6
Day 04: TUE May 3 Continue your experimental trials Day 05: WED May 4 Finish trials, start on display board, poster, or PowerPoint Day 06: THR May 5 Work on display board, poster, or PowerPoint Day 07: FRI May 6 Finish display board, poster, or PowerPoint Day 03: MON May 2 Bring materials, start experimental trials Working Phase Take pictures and/or video clips as you work. (Include these in your display)

Note: scientists typically publish their findings in science journals from universities. Step 6: Communicate Results Here is an example of what I want to see on your display board, poster, or PowerPoint beneath your step 6 label: Instructions: Get online and look up the name of a science journal from a prestigious university such as Yale, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, CALTECH, Duke, Purdue, etc. Harvard Review Harvard Example We would publish our results in the science journal called ________________ from ______________ university.
