Variables, and so much more

* Keeping in mind that we already talked about what comes before a Hypothesis statement: * 1. observation – problem statement * 2. research on subject matter * 3. Hypothesis statement

* Smither’s thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. * What is Smither’s Hypothesis? * What are the variables? Dependent vs independent?

* Homer notices that his shower is covered in a strange green slime. His friend Barney tells him that coconut juice will get rid of the green slime. Homer decides to check this out by spraying half of the shower with coconut juice. He sprays the other half of the shower with water. * Identify the variables: * Write a hypothesis that includes the variables.

* Lisa is working on a science project. After asking many of her friends, they think that Rogooti is the best hair care product around, and they believe their hair grows faster with use. She has decided to test and see if that is indeed true. * This is her hypothesis statement. "Does Rogooti (which is a commercial hair product) affect the speed of hair growth". * Based on what we have talked about – what do you think? Does it qualify as a high quality hypothesis statement?

* Make a list of all possible variables she needs to consider in her testing process: * Now identify the control, dependent and independent variables for this test:

* Let’s say you are given the task of evaluating the products effect on growth, what would you test? * Write a hypothesis statement * Write a short list of how you would approach this as an experiment considering the variables that we have already identified.
