The Slave Trade The Slave Trade was not new in Africa-the initial market was Asia; jobs as domestic servants Slavery existed to a much lesser degree in Europe The Slave trade changed after planting of sugarcane in South America and the West Indies Plantations- large agricultural estates; first in Brazil & the Caribbean Islands Great demand for slaves to work on plantations

Triangular Trade Triangular Trade marked emergence of a new world economy Triangular Trade- a system in which slaves, raw materials, and manufactured goods were traded between Africa, Europe and the American colonies ◦ Colonies provided the raw materials ◦ Africa provided the Slaves ◦ Europe provided the manufactured goods

The Middle Passage The Middle Passage- journey of slaves from Africa to Americas aboard slave ships ◦ Ten million made the journey between 16 th & 19 th centuries ◦ High death rate due to harsh conditions, starvation and sometimes suicide/ human sorrow
