Today’s verses Acts 5 1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet. 3 Then Peter said, 'Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God." 5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.

He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.

27. Convicting preaching will inevitably provoke a violent reaction from those hardened in sin. When the authorities heard Peter’s bold presentation, they heard it as blasphemy and they were furious. Instead of yielding to the truth, the authorities hardened their hearts. As they had done to Jesus in spite of the abundant evidence, they rejected the apostles’ teaching and violently opposed them as blasphemers. 33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.

28. The high priests and his fellow Sadducees were enraged with the apostles for several reasons. The apostles had denied their doctrine by proclaiming the resurrection. They had defied the Sanhedrin’s authority by preaching after they had ordered them to stop. By charging the Sanhedrin with executing the Messiah, the apostles assaulted their spirituality. Finally, by winning large numbers of converts they threatened the Sadducees’ dominion of the people. They had enough and wanted to put the troubling apostles to death. 33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.

29. Our gospel presentations must be definitive enough that the world must take note, even if they reject our message. If the gospel we preach is not convicting enough to make some men angry, is it enough to bring them salvation? 33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.

A: Remember that these miracles came after the purging of sin, after the incidence of Annanias and Sapphira. B: Yes, I realize that. When we become pure, our church can become powerful. A: What a powerful lesson! B: Let’s pray that we keep ourselves pure. A: Yes. Let’s pray together.

35. Next Week’s Conversation A: I am really upset that my boss often makes fun of me being a Christian. B: I am sorry to hear that. A: It’s really painful to face persecution in front of other co-workers. B: I can certainly understand it. However, the Bible says that Christians are bound to be persecuted because the world is ruled by Satan and Satan gets irritated by godly people. A: Really? Then I must have been irritating Satan. B: Sure. You must be doing the right thing. Jesus even said that you should be happy if you are persecuted for the name of Jesus. A: Oh really? Then I should be happy that I am being persecuted for the sake of Jesus. B: Correctly stated. You shouldn’t be discouraged at all. You should be joyful, instead.
