2 What It Looks Like (Characteristics) The Polar bear is a mammal. It is covered with hair. It gives live birth. It has a backbone. It is warm blooded. The polar bear has creamy white hair, but its skin is black.

3 Where It Lives The polar bear lives on the sea ice in the Northern arctic. Most of the year, polar bears live where the sea ice meets the water in order to hunt seals. Polar bears can be found in these countries: U.S. (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Denmark (Greenland), and Norway.

4 Life Cycle Females usually give birth to one or two young. The young are full-grown at about five or six years of age and they stay with their mothers for about two and a half years. These animals live up to 25 years. Males weigh 500 to 1100 pounds and they are 8-11 feet long. Females are smaller; they are 6 to 10 feet long and weigh 350 to 600 pounds.

5 Food Chain The sun gives energy to the phytoplankton. The phytoplankton give energy to the arctic cod. The arctic cod gives energy to the ringed seal. The ringed seal gives energy to the polar bear. The polar bear is a consumer that eats: bearded seals, harp seals, hooded seals, walruses, sea foxes and sea birds.
