Guiding Questions: How did the humans cause the pufflings’ habitats to change? Describe other ways people could have solved the pufflings’ problem. Do you think the children did a good job helping solve the problem? Choose a topic to write about. Use the graph on the following slide and cite the text to justify your answer. Use the secret recipe to respond to one of the questions.

Who was talking to Whom? Where When What did they say? “Quote” Explain Quote Here… Analysis This shows….. Because Clearly, should This Proves…. would Obviosly, could It seems... might This suggests… Evidently It appears… Clearly If…then… Obviously Fiction Nonfiction

Example I think the children did a good job in helping the pufflings. When the pufflings leave their burrows for their first flight the author tells us, “Danger Awaits.” Here the author describes some of the dangers of landing in the city, which includes traffic and other animals. It appears if the pufflings are not returned to the sea they may die. Clearly, the children are aware of the need to help the pufflings, so they take care to rescue them.

Additional Extensions You may want to choose one of the extension activities on the following slides to focus on additional skills or to help students make connections.

Puffin Poem Write a poem about puffins. Think about What they look like What they eat Where they live Read your poem to a group of classmates. Illustrate your poem.

When Animals Need Help Sometimes animals need help. Halla and her friends help the pufflings. What are some other times when animals need help? Talk it over with classmates. Think about these questions: What animals need help? Why do the need help? How do people help? What more can people do? Gather information during the discussion. Ask questions. Take notes. Then write a paragraph. Tell about animals that need help.

Puffling Poster Imagine that you live in Iceland. The village where you live does not do anything for the young pufflings. You have seen pufflings that do not make it to the sea. They’re scared and lost. You want children to help save the pufflings. Make a poster. Show how the children save the pufflings on Heimaey Island.

Halla and You How is Halla’s life like yours? Is it the same? Is it very different? Use a Venn diagram. Compare your life and Halla’s. Label one circle Halla and one circle You. When you’re finished, meet with a group of classmates. Discuss your diagrams. Answer these questions: In general, is your life like Halla’s? What is the biggest differences in your lives?

That’s a Fact Meet with a group of classmates. Try your skill at telling the differences between a fact and an opinion. Here’s how: Each of you should write two facts and two opinions. Write about Nights of the Pufflings. Put each sentence on a separate slip of paper. Place all the paper slips in a container Take turns drawing one piece of paper. Tell if the statement is a fact or an opinion Explain how you know. As a group discuss each decision.

The Main Thing Usually a paragraph has a main idea and details Choose a paragraph from Nights of the Pufflings. Draw a picture of the main idea in the middle of a piece of paper. Around the picture, draw or write details about the main idea. Meet with a group. Read the paragraph from the story. Then show them your drawing. Talk about the main idea and details.

Help Wanted Bruce McMillan is the author of Nights of the Pufflings because he writes and take photographs, he is very busy. Imagine that he has decided he will hire an assistant. Write a help-wanted ad for him. First decide what kind of helper is needed. Follow these steps: Read about the author on page 18. Review Night of the Pufflings. Think about the writing and phhotographs. What skills are needed? Take notes about the author and these skills. Use your notes to write the help-wanted add.

In the News Imagine that you are a reporter for your school newspaper. You’ve been asked to write a story about Halla. You can choose any topic for example, you can write about Halla, about her life on Heimaey Island, or about the puffins. Think about the questions Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? Use what you know from the story to write the answers. Then write the news story. Write a headline for your story.
