Essay Guidelines 2 essays due, each worth 40% of final grade The first essay must be submitted on (or before) 3pm on Thursday the 22nd of November for fulltime students and Friday the 23rd November for part-time students. The second essay is due on (or before)3pm Thursday 10th January for fulltime students and Friday, 11th January for Part-time students.. 1 hard copy to be submitted to the drop in box of the School of Law & Government AND A further electronic copy of the essay must be submitted through turnitin.com. Students should familiarise themselves with the University’s regulations on plagiarism at http://www.dcu.ie/info/regulations/plagiarism.shtmlhttp://www.dcu.ie/info/regulations/plagiarism.shtml Standard penalties will apply for work submitted late. (1% per working day) Essays must be typed (12pt, double spaced) and should be about 2500 words in length. The coversheet (available on Moodle) should be attached to all essays!

What is a social science essay/project? A social science paper is an argument. A good argument simply states a position and supports it with evidence in a clear, logical fashion Use a clear structure: – Introduction – say what you’re going to say – Body – say it – Conclusion – say that you’ve said it Demonstrate knowledge of course material

Referencing & Sources: Richard Pears & Graham Shields Cite them right: The essential referencing guide 8th Edition, Palgrave Macmillan: London, 2010 Go beyond the text book! Quotations should be referenced properly e.g. (Farrell, 1988, P25) Paraphrased arguments should also be fully referenced, including relevant page numbers or chapters or passim. A bibliography should also be included at the end of the text listing all of the sources you consulted even if you didn’t directly quote or paraphrase from them Wikipedia is not a source! Be wary of internet sources generally!

One essay from the following: To what extent can pre-twentieth century thinkers be considered International Relations scholars? Discuss with reference to one or more of Thucydides, Machiavelli & Hobbes Realism, at its heart, has a tragic view of world politics. Discuss. If the interwar International relations scholars were not ‘Idealists’, what were they? The ‘scientific’ approach to International Relations is flawed. Do you agree? Discuss with reference to the English School of IR.

Discuss with reference to an example of your choice. “Knowledge and interpretation are not only compatible with good social science, but are in fact indispensable for understanding and explaining the social construction of international reality.” (Adler, 1997, p.348) Discuss. From a Critical Theory perspective, how should International Relations scholars respond to the Global Financial Crisis?
