2. Public Speaking We study public speaking because sooner or later all of us will have to open our mouths and say some- thing in a public setting... and we will be judged by our performance!

3. Public Speaking Public speaking has 3 purposes: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain.

4. Public Speaking The most common of these 3 purposes is to inform, which is to get a general or specific message out to others.

5. Public Speaking The need to inform is often combined with the desire to persuade, which is to get others to DO something as a result of a general or specific message.

6. Public Speaking However, it is not uncommon for a purpose to be to entertain, which is to deliver a message in an engaging manner.

7. Public Speaking Whatever the purpose (s), good public speaking moves people... and causes them to think, feel, respond, etc.

8. So... What makes a good speaker? (Think DELIVERY !) What makes a good speech? (Think CONTENT !)
