4 Cost of a Hip Fracture One fractured NOF costs - £12,000 (NOS 2001) Nationally fractured NOF’s cost the UK £1.8 billion/year –45% for acute care, –50% for social care and long term care –5% for drugs and follow-up care (NOS 2001)

Significance of falls in care homes > 50% of all falls occur while residents are: – trying to get to/return from the toilet or exit the bed to get to the toilet (Hendrich 2006)

Urinary Tract Infections cont Recurrent UTI common in elderly than younger people Dehydration 10-15% in care homes (catheter) Hosam et al, 2005 Poor personal hygiene Other infections – e.g. chest infections

Signs & Symptoms Confusion/worsening mental function/distress Change in appetite/loss of appetite Decrease in fluid intake Functional decline Pain lower back, abdomen, sides Frequency/urgency Mobility – rushing to get to toilet Immobility Bladder/kidney infections – fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, etc
