In what country did the Renaissance begin? 3. Name two artists from the Renaissance. 4. What invention/development helped Renaissance ideas spread? 5. Who began the Protestant Reformation? 6. What were Protestants protesting? 7. What is the scientific method? 8. Name two scientists who had an influence during the scientific revolution. We will take this assessment again at the end of this lesson and see how your answers change!

Early Modern Times The Black Death/Plague: 1347-1351. It is estimated that upwards of 200 million died. 1 in 3 people died; some areas lost over 60% of their population Traveled along the Silk Road in Asia; spread by rats Search for explanation led to scapegoats Took almost 100 yrs for Europe to recover Renaissance Catholic Church was extremely powerful before the plague and maintained power in people’s everyday lives

Why Italy? Already connected to the tradition of Rome & Greece N. Europe was lagging behind because of the 100 Years War Overseas trade spurred on from The Crusades led to the growth of large cities so N. Italy was urban while the rest of Europe is largely rural Cities are an ideal breeding ground for the exchange of new ideas But…Bubonic plague hit these cities hard. Some lost 60% of their population Brings economic changes: fewer workers but this means they can demand higher wages Wealthy merchants pursue other interests like art, literature

What invention helped Ren ideas to spread/grow? The printing press Leads to more people learning to read and write In the 1500s, between 150-200 million books went into print. Guttenberg Bible was first but books on an array of topics are churned out quickly

Where do we go from here? The Renaissance is an important stepping stone for our development especially in terms of Western Political Thought: Democracy, Rights, Individualism It will lead to questioning the strong role of the church Reformation

Jigsaw Time You will be in groups of 3 and you will be dividing and conquering! We will count off by 9’s (there will be one group of 4) Everyone will be setting up a page of notes divided into thirds. Person 1: will be reading and taking notes on Democracy in England: Reforms in Medieval England, p. 18 – 20 Person 2: The Reformation: Causes of the Reformation/Luther Challenges the Church, p. 54 – 56 Person 3: Scientific Revolution A Revolutionary Model of the Universe, p. 189-191

Each person should become the expert on their topic. They will be teaching the rest of the group! Everyone will be answering a series of questions at the culmination of this activity so make sure you teach your group well
