2 My ancestors come from iceland.

3 Iceland was first settled by Celtic and Scandinavian Norsemen (most of them Vikings) and their irish or scottish slaves. However, there is some evidence that Irish monks might have been settled there during the summers several years before the norsemen.

4 Icelandic is in the balto- slavic-germanic language family, the germanic language branch, the northern germanic language group and the scandinavian language… area. 10 vikings wrote in runes on many of the aritfacts and tablets/documents found. Each rune had a sound as well as a meaning, usually magical or used as a symbol of a god. Warriors would often put runes on their weaponry and shields meant to protect themselves or help slay an enemy. After the vikings had started to assimilate into europe, they even used their pagan runes on christian graves until the church banned runes. vikings wrote in runes on many of the aritfacts and tablets/documents found. 11 While the vikings were still mostly pagans, they still believed in a life after death. It differs from christianity in that you didn’t really have to live a good life in order to get to valhala (the viking heaven), you just had to die in battle. There aren’t really any sources as to where the good people who didn’t die in battle went, but the murderers and such ended up in hel. 12 Valhala was described as the ultimate life for a viking. It was a huge banquet hall in asgard (the residence of the gods). It had 540 doors each wide enough for 800 warriors to pass through at a time, the roof was made of shields, and the rafters were made of spears. Each day was filled with fights to prepare for the final fight, Ragnarök. Those killed or wounded would rise again in the evenings. Valhala was described as the ultimate life for a viking. 13 Ragnarök would be the final battle between the gods and the giants, in which the world would end. Some gods would take the side of the giants, however. After the battle, a fire would sweep across the earth and destroy the gods and mankind, leaving just enough of each race to start a new world. 14 The vikings could be considered norse pirates. They raided and plundered coastal towns and villages, and were feared across europe. They did not spend their whole lives pillaging, however. At home they were mostly farmers and traders, and had a very advanced legal and governmental system. They were a proud people who valued honor and reputation (word fame). Cattle die and the wheat, too. But this thing never dies: word fame! Word fame never dies for he that achieves it well.’

15 In some cases, vikings could end up staying in the places they raided and colonizing them. Danelaw was an area in england that came under viking control when some of the vikings decided to settle there. Danelaw was eventually brought back into england after it was weakened by anglo-saxon raids. In some cases, vikings could end up staying in the places they raided and colonizing them. 16 The success of the vikings as raiders was largely because of their ships. The vikings used longships. These ships were highly maneuverable and could use sails or oars. They also had very shallow drafts, making them perfect for lightning fast hit-and- run attacks on settelements. The success of the vikings as raiders was largely because of their ships. 18 Icelanders have a different naming system than the rest of the world. Unlike other scandinavian countries, icelanders still use ‘son of …’ or ‘daughter of …’ to make their last name. the father’s name is usually used, but the mother’s can also be used. 19 Iceland goes to many lengths to keep their language intact. While the rest of the world adopts english words as english speakers invent new technology, iceland creates new icelandic words for the technology in order to preserve their language. The school system does place heavy emphasis on learning foreign languages. As well as icelandic, kids learn english and danish in compulsory school, and sometimes french, german or spanish in upper secondary school.
