Understanding Science Mrs. Miller

Unit Goal: Use the scientific process with all of it’s levels and steps to identify, analize, and solve problems. Daily Objective: Recognize that scientists who make contributions to scientific knowledge come from different backgrounds. Essential Question: How can science provide answers to your questions about the world around you?

Branches of Science Textbook pgs. NOS 4 – NOS 5

Marking the Text (Follow Reading Guide) Complete Textbook pg. NOS 5 Class discussion

Earth Science The study of Earth and space including landforms, rocks, and soil,

Life Science The study of all living things including plants, animals, and ecosystems.

Physical Science The study of chemist and physics including forces and energy

Who Studies What? (ISN pg. 3)

Instructions: 1.Travel in groups and complete various “Who Studies What?" as you learn about different branches of science. Some examples of the branches of science you already learned about were: - Earth Science - Life Science - Physical Science 2. Write down the essential question 3. Divide your page as instructed 4. Complete Who Studies What? Activity

Who Studies What? There are dozens of different kinds of scientists, all asking of questions about the way the world works. If you follow a scientist around for a while, you would notice what kinds of things she or he studies. Your job is to find out which field of study would study which topic. Using your electronic device, do research about each of the scientist. Choose the best answer for each area of study. In small group, research about the scientists you and your group received. You can use an electronic device, a book, a magazine articles or any other resource.. As you explore different types of scientists, record your observations on the Who Studies What? (ISN pg 3)

Scientists The world we live in today would no doubt be a different place if it weren't for the amazing discoveries produced by famous scientists. Their ideas, research, experiments, publications and determination are an inspiration to those that follow in their footsteps.

Who Studied What? Look at the pictures below. Make a careful guess about what kind of scientist each one might be.

Aristotle As a famous Greek philosopher, educator and scientist, his works were written on a variety of topics, including morality and aesthetics, logic and science, politics and metaphysics. Aristotle was the one who updated engraving and performed a large-scale classification of plants and animals. What branch of science or field did he study?

Albert Einstein Albert Einstein changed the world of science with his brilliant work in theoretical physics. His theories, equations and ideas became the stuff of legend and his image is known around the world. What branch of science or field did he study?

Isaac Newton Sir Isaac Newton was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, and natural philosopher who is generally regarded as one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians in history. Newton described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion (Newton Forces of Law), laying the groundwork for classical mechanics. What branch of science or field did he study?

You will choose some cards with different science related professions. Research and then choose the correct answer. Write down your findings on your ISN page 3. Each box must include the following information. 1.- Scientist_________________ 2.Branch of Science __________ 3. Brief job description________ (example – studies plants and so forth) 4. Colorful drawing and labels of the scientist, tools or anything that relates to his/her job. 2. Same as box 1 3. Same as above 4. Same as above

Summary (ISN pg. 3) Write a 5 sentence paragraph about characteristics that scientists possess. Answer the essential question What kinds of people are scientists? What do scientists do? What characteristics do scientists demonstrate? Write about something you learned today

Become a Scientists! (ISN pg. 4) o Now, using what you've learned, draw an image of you as scientist (or take a photo of you as a scientist and tape it or glue it on your page. o After you have completed your drawing or gluing your picture, write words to describe the type of job that you, as a scientist, are responsible for.

Homework (Extension) Choose one scientist to research using online resources, articles, and biographies. Interview the scientist: Imagining that he or she is a 7 th grader during the time period in which that scientist lived, interview that person and write down the answers based on your research: Ask information about his/her interests, their favorite subject at school, if he/she is planning to become a famous scientist, wonder about the scientist's work he/she contributed and the way they felt as a scientist when he/she impacted the world back then and in the future. Add up some of your own. (You can come up with other questions)
