Static Friction The force that opposes the start of motion between two objects in contact with one another. Coefficient of Static Friction=μ s F f = μ s x F n If the applied force cannot overcome the static frictional force…the object doesn’t move

Kinetic Friction The force that is exerted on one surface by another when the surfaces are in motion. Coefficient of Kinetic Friction=μ k F f = μ k x F n Kinetic friction is NOT as great as static friction (easier to overcome) Once moving, a force must still be applied or the object will stop moving.
