TEAM BUILDING
2
WHY IS TEAM BUILDING IMPORTANT? YOUR ABILITY TO GET ALONG WITH OTHER PEOPLE, AND USING TEAMWORK WILL LARGELY DETERMINE HOW SUCCESSFUL YOU ARE IN YOUR CAREER. SO… IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CAN WORK WELL WITH OTHERS ON YOUR TEAM!! IN SOME WORK SITUATIONS YOU CAN CHOOSE WHO YOU WORK WITH, IN OTHERS YOU JUST HAVE TO LEARN TO GET ALONG WITH OTHERS IN ORDER FOR THE TEAM TO SUCCEED.
3
TEAM BUILDING BEING ON A WORKPLACE TEAM CAN IMPROVE YOUR POSITION WITHIN THE COMPANY. TEAM SUCCESS REFLECTS POSITIVELY ON EACH MEMBER, AND RECOGNITION OF YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS MAY INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF BEING PROMOTED (MAKING MORE MONEY!!)
4
BUILDING A TEAM BUSINESSES HAVE FOUND THAT TEAMS ARE ESPECIALLY PRODUCTIVE WHEN MEMBERS COME FROM A VARIETY OF BACKGROUNDS HAVE DIFFERENT AREAS OF EXPERTISE. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT DIVERSITY CAN IMPROVE GROUP CREATIVITY AND DECISION MAKING. TEAM MEMBERS ARE SELECTED ON GENDER, CULTURAL DIVERSITY, ETHNIC DIVERSITY, TALENTS, SKILLS, ATTITUDES, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE. WHY DO YOU THINK DIVERSITY IN TEAM MEMBERS MAKES A TEAM MORE EFFECTIVE?
5
SETTING TEAM GOALS A TEAM’S GOALS ARE THE REASONS WHY THE TEAM EXISTS. DEFINING THE TEAM’S PURPOSE MAY INVOLVE A GROUP DISCUSSION WITH EVERYONE’S INPUT. TEAM MEMBERS MAY ALL HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS ON WHAT THE TEAM SHOULD DO. THAT IS WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO EVERYONE’S IDEAS, YOUR AMOUNT OF TIME AND YOUR RESOURCES TO COME UP WITH THE BEST SOLUTION!
6
SETTING TEAM GOALS GOALS MUST BE CLEAR AND MEASURABLE. THE GROUP SHOULD BENEFIT WHEN THE GOALS ARE REACHED. ANSWERING THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS SHOULD HELP IDENTIFY AND SET THE TEAMS GOALS: WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO DO? HOW WILL WE KNOW WHEN WE HAVE SUCCEEDED? WHAT ARE THE REWARDS FOR US IF WE SUCCEED? WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES FOR US IF WE FAIL? -ALL OF YOUR TEACHERS AT NAHS ARE A TEAM. OUR GOAL- TO GET ALL STUDENTS TO SUCCEED AT 80% OR BETTER, WE KNOW THIS BY THE POST TEST RESULTS, WE ARE CONSTANTLY LOOKING AT WAYS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN FOR ALL STUDENTS.
7
COMPLETING THE GOAL, PUTTING IT INTO ACTION BRAINSTORMING- OCCURS WHEN TEAM MEMBERS MEET AND TOSS OUT AS MANY IDEAS AS POSSIBLE---WITHOUT EVALUATING THEM. QUANTITY, NOT QUALITY, IS THE GOAL OF BRAINSTORMING. -HAS A TEACHER EVER TOLD YOU TO BRAINSTORM? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY TELL YOU TO DO SO? AFTER BRAINSTORMING YOU HAVE TO SELECT TEAM ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AMONG THE GROUP MEMBERS, AND PUT YOUR PLAN INTO ACTION.
8
TEAM ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES FORMAL ROLES- CLEARLY STATED AND CLEARLY DEFINED. INITIATOR- MEMBER WHO PROPOSES NEW IDEAS. SYNTHESIZER- MEMBER WHO BRINGS THE INITIATORS IDEAS TOGETHER IN A CREATIVE WAY. SUPPORTER (CHEERLEADER)- MEMBER WHO PRAISES OTHERS EFFORTS. EVERYONE SHOULD DO THIS ONE. MANY TIMES TEAM MEMBERS FILL MULTIPLE INFORMAL ROLES. INFORMAL ROLES- MEMBERS CHOOSE VOLUNTARILY. LEADER- MEMBER WHO DIRECTS TEAM’S EFFORTS AND RUNS MEETINGS, KEEPS THE FOCUS OF THE GROUP ON THE TASK, DEALS WITH ISSUES AMONG GROUP MEMBERS IN A POSITIVE WAY. SCRIBE (REPORTER)- MEMBER WHO RECORDS GROUP DECISIONS AND TAKES NOTES/DOES THE WRITTEN PORTION. (EX: SECRETARY)
9
LEADERSHIP ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLES IN A TEAM IS THE LEADER. LEADER- A PERSON WHO DIRECTS, GUIDES, OR COMMANDS. THE LEADER OFTEN DETERMINES WHETHER THE TEAM SUCCEEDS OR FAILS. IN SPORT ED AT NAHS THE LEADERS/CAPTAINS ARE SELECTED BY THE PE TEACHERS, THOSE STUDENTS HAVE SHOWN LEADERSHIP QUALITIES. HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN A TEAM/GROUP? WHAT WERE THE PROS AND CONS OF BEING THE LEADER? DID YOUR TEAM SUCCEED OR FAIL? WHY?
10
CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEADER MOST LEADERS HAVE THESE QUALITIES: ABILITY TO GAIN RESPECT AND TRUST DEPENDABILITY ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY FLEXIBILITY GOOD JUDGEMENT COURAGE HONESTY
11
ASSIGNING TASKS THE PROCESS OF DIVIDING UP TASKS AMONG TEAM MEMBERS AND ASSIGNING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEN MAY BE DIFFICULT. THEY ARE USUALLY DECIDED BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS: TEAM LEADER MAKES THE ASSIGNMENTS TEAM MEMBERS AGREE ON TASK ASSIGNMENTS BY CONSENSUS (MAJORITY OF VOTES) TEAM MEMBERS VOLUNTEER FOR ASSIGNMENTS. TEAM MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL TASKS THAT INVOLVE THEIR STRENGTHS. YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN PLACED ON ANY TEAM (SCHOOL, SPORT, WORK, ETC) YOUR TEAM MEMBERS ARE COUNTING ON YOU. YOU CANNOT SIT AROUND AND HAVE OTHERS DO THE JOB FOR YOU, IT’S NOT FAIR TO THEM.
12
IF PROBLEMS ARISE WHEN YOU ARE WORKING WITH OTHERS PROBLEMS CAN ARISE, IT’S VERY BENEFICIAL IF YOU KNOW HOW TO HANDLE PROBLEM SOLVING AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN A CALM AND RATIONAL MANNER.
13
PROBLEM SOLVING (DECISION MAKING PROCESS) 1.DEFINE THE PROBLEM 2.SET THE CRITERIA 3.EXPLORE ALTERNATIVES 4.EVALUATE ALTERNATIVES 5.CHOOSE AND IMPLEMENT THE BEST OPTION 6.REVIEW THE EFFECTS OF THE SOLUTION
14
MANAGING CONFLICTS CONFLICT MANAGEMENT- THE ABILITY TO RESOLVE DISAGREEMENTS CONSTRUCTIVELY. RULES TO HELP WITH CONFLICT MANAGEMENT 1.FIND A NEUTRAL MEETING PLACE 2.PUT YOURSELF IN THE OTHER PERSON’S POSITION 3.ASK THE OTHER PERSON TO CONSIDER YOUR POSITION AND LISTEN TO YOU. 4.LOOK AT THE PROBLEM OBJECTIVELY (NOT INFLUENCED BY PERSONAL FEELINGS) 5.SPEAK RESPECTFULLY 6.REACH A WIN-WIN SOLUTION IF A CONFLICT BETWEEN TEAM MEMBERS CANNOT BE RESOLVED, THE TEAM MAY NOT BE SUCCESSFUL IN REACHING THEIR GOALS.
