SkyMap Assignment: Use the star map to identify 4 constellations, 1 planet and 4 stars. List the space objects you identified on the Sky Map Identification sheet. The sheet will be due May 6.

SkyMap This is done outside at night! Instructions: Figure which direction is North, south, east and west on the chart. Holding the chart overhead, match the compass directions on the map to the cardinal directions. Look for the brightest stars, and planets, and match to the chart. Record the items you match in the sky at night! Video link instructions link

1. Revolution – The elliptical motion of a body as it orbits another body in space. Earth’s revolution is 365.25 days in length (year) 2. Rotation: the spinning motion of a body on its axis. Earth’s rotation lasts 24 hours (one day)

3. Orbit - the path an object takes around a body in space. Satellites orbit the Earth, along with the moon. 4. Astronomical unit – Unit of measure from the surface of the Sun to the Earth. Approximately 150,000,000 km

5. Rocky (terrestrial) planet – first 4 planets of the solar system. Since they are made of rock or soil (terrestrial) the name is given. 6.Constellation – a series of stars which when using imagination, makes a shape in the sky. Often called the Zodiac.

7. Eclipse- an event in which the shadow of one celestial body falls on another. Lunar eclipse – moon is hidden by Earth; solar eclipse – sun hidden by moon 8. Magnitude – the measure of the brightness of a star. AM of 4 is about the dimmest we can see with the naked eye. Sun has a AM of -26
