2
Material that can change one or more of its properties in response to an external stimulus. For example, the shape of the material will change in response to different temperature or application of electrical charge or presenting of magnetic field.
3
Most of smart materials have been discovered around 50 years ago, but they were not applied to aerospace industry yet.
4
Materials have a strong relationship with aerospace industry, as it always determines the weight, strength, efficiency, cost and difficulty of maintenance of an aircraft.
5
PIEZEOELECTRIC MATERIALS SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY MAGNETOSTERICTIVE MATERIALS PH-SENSITIVE POLYMERS HALOCHROMIC MATERIALS CHROMOGENIC SYSTEM PHOTO MECHANICAL MATERIALS SELF-HEALING MARETIALS
6
There are two types of piezoelectric materials:- Piezoelectric ceramics Piezoelectric polymers
7
Able to switch from high to low damping characteristic when temperature or stress changes. Super elastic behavior in high temperature. Good temperature sensor.
8
There are two kind of ph-sensitive materials:- Acidic group (-COOH,-SO3H) e.g..- polyacrylic acid Basic group (NH3) e.g. :- chitosan
9
These materials are commonly used materials that changes their colour as a result of changing acidity. Example:- corrosion in the metal
10
Changes the shape of materials when it is exposed to light.
11
Some materials have ability to heal after being wounded. Example:- polymers, ceramics
12
SMART MATERIALS IN AEROSPACE SMART MATERIALS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING MECHATRONICS KEN MATERIALS
13
an aircraft constructed from a sensual structure has an advantage of self-checking its performance to a greater level than that of current data recording, and provide ground crews with improved health and usage monitoring.
