1 February 16th and 17th Unit 6: Energy Transformations Knowledgeable
Objective(s): SWBAT identify types of energy through examples. SWBAT give an example of energy transformations in an object. Relevance: Energy transformations allow us to perform tasks that are meaningful to our lives like digesting food, cooking, and driving. Do Now: Separate half-sheet hand-out MATERIALS NEEDED: Pencil Unit 6, Day 4 Packet Agenda

2 Interactive Video You will see an interactive video about energy transformations and some material may look and sound familiar to you as you have already learned it. While watching, fill in the following table on your guided notes – try to name as many different types of energy as you can and provide an example of that specific type. Type of Energy Example Please play the following video for the scholars – it is interactive so it will ask you to do things during it. Scholars will fill out the table above in their guided notes. An answer key is in the Lesson Plan for you!

3 Energy Energy is a property of matter, and all matter has it.
Energy is the ability to do work. Electrical Energy Light Energy Chemical Energy There are many different types of energy – these are a few examples. ASK: Which two have you learned about already? Thermal energy and mechanical (potential and kinetic) Sound Energy Thermal Energy Mechanical Energy

4 The Law of Conservation of Energy
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It is only transformed, transferred or stored. ASK: What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Have scholars write this on their guided notes – this will be an important part of the lesson.

5 Gallery Walk 15 min There are several new vocabulary words that are types of energy that you will learn in this lesson. When you’re writing the definition, no talking When you’re coming up with examples, you may whisper with the scholars around you. Scholars will perform a gallery walk to learn the vocabulary words, they are hung around the room. They have a table on their guided notes that they will fill in.

6 Gallery Walk 15 min 1. Write down the definition to the word in your guided notes. 2. Discuss some examples of that type of energy. You can use the timer on the slide, or you can use your own timer. Don’t give more than two minutes to scholars so that it does not take up too much time.

7 Watch out! There is a fixed amount of energy in our world – there is a limit to it. That is why energy has to be constantly transformed from one kind to another. Multiple forms of energy can happen at once. These are misconceptions to correct before moving on

8 Word Scramble Challenge!
30 sec! CHEMICAL Definition: A form of energy produced through reactions that occur in chemical compounds. IHCEALMC Definition: A form of energy produced through reactions that occur in chemical compounds. Have scholars look at the word and try to guess what it is, when they know, they should just raise their hand silently. When most of the class has raised their hand, then you can have them all say it out loud together. They may use their notes.

9 Vocabulary Matching 8 min Use the pictures at your table group and match them to the correct definition to check your knowledge about these types of energy. Work with your elbow partner – no more than 3 people to a group. Voice level 1 – 2 minutes Each table group should have 2 sets of vocabulary cards at their desk to use with their elbow partner. There may be a few groups of 3 at the table groups of 5.

30 sec! Mechanical Energy A form of energy that exhibits wave-like behavior has it travels through space. Sound Energy Light Energy The sum of the motion energy and position energy in an object. Energy made from vibrations and requires a medium to travel though. Have scholars match the words on the left to the correct definitions on the right. They may use their notes.

11 Transfer vs. Transformation
What does the word transfer mean? Energy transfer is when one type of energy moves from one place to another. This section is just allowing scholars to see the difference between the word transfer and transform. ASK: What do you think the word transfer means? (they can discuss with elbow partner). There may be multiple responses. With energy, transfer is what happens when one type of energy is moved to another place (example – heat is transferred from a stove to a pot or mechanical energy when potential is transferred to kinetic).

What does the word transformation mean? Energy transformation is when one type of energy changes to another type of energy. ASK: What does the word transformation mean? How is it different from transfer? Transformation is when something completely changes into something else. With energy, this might be when electrical energy is transformed into light energy.

What does the word transformation mean? Energy transformation is when one type of energy changes to another type of energy. Example of energy transformations within a flashlight – chemical energy from the battery is transformed into electrical energy for the flashlight which then gives of light energy and even thermal energy.

15 Stop and Jot What is the difference between energy transfer and energy transformation? Energy transfer is when the same type of energy is moved to a different place and energy transformation is when a type of energy is completely changed into another type.

16 What is a common energy transformation you think occurs everyday?
Think-Pair-Share What is a common energy transformation you think occurs everyday? Many possible answers – have scholars really think about the transformations that take place – example: a lamp (electrical energy to light energy, to thermal energy)

17 Think-Pair-Share How does the Law of Conservation of Energy relate to energy transformations? Energy transformations proves the Law of Conservation of Energy because the energy is being transformed into different types – it is not created or destroyed.

18 Guided Practice I will show you a few energy transformations.
14 min I will show you a few energy transformations. Your job is to identify the energy transformations that are taking place in each example. You will write the transformations on a white board. Remember, more than one could be taking place at a time. Unfortunately, these will have to be pictures. If there are not enough whiteboard markers, just have them work with their elbow partner. There are more white board markers behind my desk on the white shelf.

Scholars can actually perform this, just have them rub their hands together quickly. Scholars should see that there is movement (mechanical) and then should feel some heat which is part of thermal. Mechanical - Thermal

25 Independent Practice 20 min Complete the independent practice about energy transformations. During this time you should be working silently and independently. If you have a question, please raise your hand silently at your seat. During independent practice scholars should be completely silent and working individually. It’s okay if scholars are not given the full 25 minutes to work – just give them as much time is available. Please leave about 5 minutes of class for the exit ticket and to pack up.

26 Exit Ticket Turn in as you leave! Complete the exit ticket silently.
You may pack up your things. Give scholars about 5 minutes to complete their exit ticket and collect it from them.
