Why you should consider taking these courses

Computing occupations make up two-thirds of all projected new jobs in STEM fields, making Computer Science one of the most in-demand college degrees. And computing is used all around us and in virtually every field. But computer science is marginalized throughout education. 75% of U.S. schools don’t even offer computer science. But… you are in luck! Burke has multiple computer based courses!

Intro to Digital Design – 1 semester Offers students a basic introduction to the Adobe suite including Photoshop, Flash, and Illustrator Digital Media – 1 semester Builds upon the knowledge gained in Intro to Digital design with more advanced Photoshop and Illustrator skills. Also include a basic introduction to Web Design through HTML and CSS coding and Web Animation. Web Design – 1 year (dual enrolled with Metropolitan Community College) Students will learn how to build and create Web Pages through HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery. Computer Graphics (1-2 & 3-4) – 1 year Allows students another opportunity to learn and expand their knowledge of the Adobe suite include Photoshop, Flash, and Illustrator AP Computer Science – 1 year (opportunity to earn college credit through AP exam) Students will learn C++ programming language and prepare to take the AP Computer Science exam to earn college credit for coding and programming skills.

Nebraska currently has 3,356 open computing jobs (3.0 times the average demand rate in Nebraska). Nebraska had only 383 computer science graduates in 2013; only 13% were female. The average salary for a computing occupation in NE is $73,360, which is significantly higher than the average salary in the state ($41,080). So… If you like computers, are interested making money, and want a job when you get out of college consider exploring the field of computer science today by including some of these courses in your schedule today.

Another class… not computers related offered here at Burke is Entrepreneurship. If you are interested in being your own boss and starting your own company this is a great class to take. Entrepreneurism is very important! Every year to keep our economy growing we need 1,000,000 new startups. 1 semester class easy to fit into your schedule. This class is also Dual Enrolled with Metropolitan Community College so you can start earning college credit now. You get to pick your own business idea and then work throughout the semester to plan your idea!
