Lesson 8: Human Geography Why are we different?
2
Remember: Geography is the study of the world, its people, and the landscapes people have created. Landscapes are made up of human and physical features. So far we have focused mainly on physical features but today we are going to talk about the human features of geography. What do you think some of those features might be?
3
Goal for Today: By the end of class today you will: Be able to explain what human geography is Be able to describe how human geography influences a group of people
4
Human Geography: Add to your glossary: Human geography: the study of the movement, experiences and interactions of people with each other and their environment. Things like…How do people earn money? What language do they speak? What foods do they eat? What is their culture like? Are they rich or poor? What do they do for fun? What religion do they practice (or do they practice no religion)? Where do they live? How do they move around….and more!!!
5
Who is a typical human?:
6
Why are people different?: You may be typical in some ways, but not in others. People are different and act differently often because of their geography. Your location and geography influence a lot of parts of your life: -Do you live in a city or the countryside? -Who do you interact with? Or are you isolated (far away from others)? -What is the climate and the physical environment like? -What natural resources do you have access to? How would these different factors influence how people live their lives?
7
Activity 1: You will be ASSIGNED a group. Your group will receive information about the geography of a region. Imagine what the people of the place might be like, based on the information you are given. Answer the questions on the handout as a group for your imaginary people. EXPLAIN your answers…why did you decide people would live this way??
8
Activity 1: Find your partner group. Compare what you write down. What was the same and different? Why? Share your ideas with the class.
9
Homework: Assignment 7 on Moodle. There is reading to do. Do your best…if you don’t understand every word that is ok! Look at the pictures – you can learn a lot from the pictures. The answers are not always given to you…you need to think about the information and make conclusions based on what you learned.
