3. What is Credit by Demonstrated Mastery? Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) is a NEW option for obtaining high school credit for standard level courses in North Carolina without requiring the student to complete classroom instruction and/or seat time. GS 115C-81

4. Which classes does CDM apply? ALL high school standard level courses. Courses that are NOT eligible are… Advanced Placement, Honors Level, Healthful Living, and certain CTE courses.

5. Who can apply? Any student eligible to take high school courses, including middle school students offered Math I or Spanish I, can apply for CDM. However, CDM is for students who can achieve MASTERY in a subject and not basic understanding or knowledge.

6. How will this affect my GPA? It will not affect your GPA. CDM will only give passing credit for a course. This means it will not help or hurt your GPA but will allow a student to move on to the next course in sequence or to an advanced level course. Credit is indicated as “Pass” on a student’s transcript.

7. How will students demonstrate mastery? Students must successfully complete both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the CDM process. A student will only progress to Phase 2 if they obtain the appropriate minimum score on the Phase 1 assessment.

8. What is Phase 1? Mastery on a standardized examination EOC where applicable Math 1 > 264 (scale score) Biology > 261 (scale score) English 2 > 165 (scale score) CTE Post-assessment > 93 Locally developed exam or NC Final exam > 94

9. What is Phase 2? Phase 2 involves students completing a series of artifacts, projects, and/or performance tasks to exhibit mastery of content specific standards.

10. Will Phase 2 be the same for each course? No. Phase 2 tasks will differ between courses due to the nature of the course involved. Students will be given a specific rubric and time span of a month to complete artifacts and submit.

11. Will the process be the same at each school? Yes. Assessments will be created at the state or district level (not school-level). Phase 2 performance tasks will also be created and reviewed at the district level.

12. How do I apply? You can download the application off of the ABSS CDM website or pick up a hard copy in your guidance office at school. We also have copies for you here tonight.

13. When is the application due? December 15th, 2015 Please submit your application to your guidance department no later than December 15th, 2015.

14. What happens next? You will be contacted by your guidance counselor to set up a parent/student conference to discuss further the CDM process, scheduling options, etc. If you turn in your application on time and are not contacted by your counselor before the end of January 2016, please request a conference.

15. When is Phase 1 testing? Phase 1 testing will take place during the first 2 weeks of February.

16. What can I do to prepare? You can… Review the standards on the NCDPI website.

17. What if I don’t pass the test? If you do not qualify with your test score, you are not eligible to move on to Phase 2. You will not be able to re-test or go through the process for the same course again. You will need to enroll to take the course as scheduled. However, students who do not qualify will NOT be penalized in any way.

18. What if I do qualify? If you achieve the appropriate score needed on the assessment, you will be notified and will move on to Phase 2. For Phase 2, you will be given your content- specific artifact/portfolio assignment, along with a rubric and due date. (Phase 2 products will be due late April/Early May 2016)

19. What happens after I complete Phase 2? Families will be notified in June 2016 If the student does not meet the criteria, the student/parent will be notified of the appeals process. If the student does meet the criteria and earns CDM for the course, the student will need to meet with school counselors to discuss course scheduling changes for the next year.
