2. What is Running Start? From the “Learning by Choice” Bill which allows qualified juniors and seniors to enroll in Community College courses, tuition-free, to complete high school course requirements. It’s does just that: Gives high school students a “running start” on college-level classes. An alternative way for students to transition to college.

3. Eligibility/Cost Students must be in Junior standing: 11 credits. Students must qualify on Compass Test @ SCC. Students must qualify on Accuplacer @ OC and must have at least a 2.5 GPA. All fines must be paid! FREE Tuition, for 100 level courses and above. Students must pay for books, lab fees and transportation.

4. Do High School Graduation Requirements Change??? NO! Students must: Take equivalent courses for all high school requirements. Earn 23 credits. Complete the 5-Year Plan. Pass the Smarter Balance ELA & EOC Algebra/Biology tests.

5. Advantages Allows students to take classes not offered at the high school. Provides opportunity to earn college credit, tuition-free. Enables student to complete an AA degree while working toward a high school diploma, potentially reducing time in college. Provides a more mature social climate. Gives opportunity to demonstrate independence and self-reliance.

6. Disadvantages No monitoring: no progress reports, no attendance reports, no grades sent home. Credits may not be accepted at all colleges. Scheduling challenges with activities, course availability, and transportation. Maturity level may not match responsibility/trust required. May accelerate premature separation from school and home.

7. Next steps… Make a decision! Ideally prior to March 18 th, end of BHS pre-course requests. Part time or full time Running Start?
