3 The purpose of this orientation is to share information with principals about the four- year Ohio Resident Educator Program. As you review the elements of the program, think about your school community and your role as a learning, instructional leader. Orientation Purpose

Residency is a time to practice, refine and gain a deeper understanding of the art and science of teaching under the guidance of a certified mentor and the support of a professional learning community. What is Residency? 5

Resident Educator 7 Responsibilities

Resident Educator : Year 1 During Y EAR 1, the Resident Educator will Communicate with mentor and principal Use formative assessment activities to collect evidence and advance practice Use the state-designed formative assessment tools (e.g., goal setting, self- assessment, collaborative log) to document their growth over time Maintain these formative assessment tools as a collection of evidence to inform summative assessment Complete the Year 1 Formative Progress Review at the end of the year 8

Resident Educator: Year 2 During Y EAR 2, the Resident Educator will Continue processes, protocols, and tools at a deeper level Utilize differentiated support and resources to move toward meeting goals Complete Year 2 Formative Progress Review at the end of the year 9

Resident Educator: Years 3-4 During Y EARS 3-4 of the Resident Educator Program, the Resident Educator will Y EAR 3 Prepare for and take the summative assessment if ready Year 3/4 Successfully complete summative assessment Year 4 Re-take any deficient portions of summative assessment Upon successful completion of the summative assessment, apply for the 5-year professional license Participate in professional development and leadership roles 10

What should the PRINCIPAL do to support Resident Educators? System of Support 12

Principal To provide support for the RE program, the Principal should Work with program coordinators to select and assign mentors Ensure mentors attend state required training Provide time for mentor-Resident Educator collaboration Provide opportunities for reciprocal observations Collaborate with mentor/Resident Educator to align Resident Educator goals 13

Program Coordinator To provide support for the RE program, the program coordinator should Plan, implement and report on the program Provide an orientation for REs Communicate Resident Educator information to any teacher(s) in their district/school who may be eligible to participate Register Resident Educators in the state’s CORE system Work with principals to select and assign mentors Ensure mentors attend state training 16

System of Support What should the MENTOR do to support Resident Educators? 17

Mentor: Year 1 During Year 1 of the Resident Educator Program, the mentor will Required: Attend Instructional Mentoring and Resident Educator-1 training to obtain certification Communicate with the Resident Educator and building administrator Respect the confidential relationship with the Resident Educator and principal Support Resident Educator through the use of formative assessment processes, protocols and tools Collaborate with the program coordinator to complete end-of- year Formative Progress Review 18

Mentor: Years 2-4 Y EAR 2: Provide differentiated support to meet the needs of each Resident Educator Y EAR 3: Facilitate and support the Resident Educator in preparing for summative assessment Y EAR 4: Facilitate and support the Resident Educator to “re-take“ deficient portions of summative assessment Facilitate Resident Educator participation in professional development and leadership activities 19
