Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 20067 TF-EMC2 European Middleware Coordination and Collaboration New Charter approved (until 31 Aug 2008) Support and promote middleware technologies AAI, PKI, SAML protocol etc Define common schemas to support the exchange of information among higher education institutions in Europe Define best practices for federations and confederations New ideas and projects To liaise with other international activities GEANT2, OGF (GGF), Internet2, Liberty Alliance) http://www.terena.nl/activities/tf-emc2/

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 20068 REFEDS REFEDS (Research and Education Federations) aims to define procedures and guidelines to allow different federations to inter-operate REFEDS met for the first time during the TERENA Conference in 2005 to follow up on an initial attempt to tackle inter-federation issues (Cotswold) With a more practical approach to agree on a roadmap for the activities to be undertaken 3 meetings have taken place since TNC05 http://www.terena.nl/activities/refeds/ j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 20069 Services: SCHAC Schema Harmonisation Committee (SCHAC) Set-up in Feb 05 to harmonise schemas in the field of high education Mainly concerned with inter-institutional data exchange Very good progresses: first release of “SCHAC Individual Attributes Specification” in May 2006. Participation from NORDUNET, CESNET, RedIRIS, SURFnet, FUNET, SWITCH, NCU, CRU and others.. http://www.terena.nl/activities/tf-emc2/schac.html j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200610 AA-RR Authentication and Authorisation Requester- Responder – Different AA systems in use in the various NRENs – AA-RR is able to assess interoperability among AA systems and infrastructures. – AA-RR important also for the development of JRA5 in GN2, and its application in (inter)national interoperability of AAIs http://www.terena.nl/activities/tf-emc2/aarr.html j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200611 Services: SCS What is it about? SCS= Server Certificate Service To issue server certificates - popup free - unlimited number For whom? European National Research and Education Networks 8 NRENs + TERENA involved UKERNA, BELNET, UNINETT joining … others ? “small ones” welcome! Phase 2 starts in 2007 Longer duration More “service style”, web information, etc.. http://www.terena.nl/activities/tf-emc2/scs.html

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200612 Services: TACAR TERENA Academic CA Repository Repository of root-CA-certificates of the NRENs or other research organisations (policy) Publishing the root-CA on a trusted web site TACAR is a big step towards trust building http://www.tacar.org/

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200613 TF-Mobility Charter extended until 31 August 2008 promotes the benefits of the technology and assist in the rollout of the roaming infrastructure; provides a technical-knowledge repository containing information about standards and product for roaming services; tests, updates and extends current roaming infrastructure among NRENs and beyond; http://www.terena.nl/activities/tf-mobility/

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200614 Services: eduroam ® eduroam as a (con)federated authN infrastructure allows users to log in at any visited eduroam network using their ‘home-credentials’ 26 NRENs in Europe Australia and Taiwan joined Internet2 is considering joining http://www.eduroam.org/

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200615 eduroam ® coverage

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200616 eduroam ® challege

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200617 TF-VVC Voice and Video Collaboration Community Involvement Sept 2004 – Sept 2006 9 meetings (mostly by Video conference) 150 subscribers to the e-mail distribution list Outputs Directory of service contacts Publications Recommendations Best Practice Successors will be TF-VSS and TF-ECS

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200618 TF-ECS Enhanced Communications Services Charter, 1 Oct 2006 until 20 Sept 2008 New communications technologies Use of new protocols Integration of security and AAI, ENUM Shared applications / chat / video... Update the IP telephony online cookbook Design of a future testbed http://www.terena.nl/activities/tf-ecs/

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200619 TF-VSS the challenge…

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200620 TF-VSS Videoconference Service Studies Charter, 1 Oct 2006 until 30 Sept 2007 Exploring with the NRENs a future European-wide videoconferencing service Define an Architecture Progress Report at TNC 2007 Final Report including a Feasibility Study September 2007 http://www.terena.nl/activities/tf-vss/

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200621 Connecting Schools Discussions on schoolnet list Study as part of EARNEST “Other Users” Pedagogical Benefits & Justification Discussions at TTC Are there still further technical issues to solve LAN management Lack of local expertise Filtering, White-listing, Blacklisting Feedback sought from GA Members j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200622 Arts and Humanities TTC discussions in 2006 Objective to encourage novel use of networks Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences Significant interest in TERENA community Summer 2006 – Informal Expert Panel formed Involvement by: Technical Experts Content Providers (including BBC)

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200623 EARNEST Technical Sub-Study Areas Transmission Technologies fibre provisioning, equipment evolution, transmission protocols Control Plane Technologies switching & routing matrices (both optical & IP), multicasting, IPvx, QoS provisioning. Operations and Performance E2E performance, network management (optical & IP), VPN provisioning, PERT. Middleware authentication and authorisation infrastructures, mobility, PKI. j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200624 Transmission Technologies 40 Gbps-capable equipment is available, but NRENs likely to jump directly to 100 Gbps. Fibre upgrades required. More economical to use multiple 10 Gbps for forseeable future. Gigabit Ethernet or SDH/SONET? Is SDH too complicated and/or cost effective for NRENs? Requirement for analogue transport (telescopes/radar), will there finally be market for OOO switches? j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200625 Control Plane Technologies Lack of automation and dynamic provisioning at optical level. ‘Standardised’ protocols (e.g. GMPLS, G.ASON) often don’t interoperate. Is IP multicasting viable outside localised networks? Investigate optical multicasting. Better integration between multicast access control and AAA middleware. Consider GENI developments. j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200626 Operations & Performance Dark fibre means NRENs responsible for more networking layers. Optimal layer for VPN provisioning. Monitoring & measurement more difficult with different layers and higher speeds. Despite bandwidth improvements, still problems with latency, delay, jitter etc.. Will packet switching scale? Better tools for managing optical switches (TL1 or SNMP). j

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200627 Middleware Many standards initiatives, which will prevail. Integration with applications and control plane. Local identity management. Privacy and regulatory issues.

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200628 Future Lower Layers Workshop (Jan 2007?) … euro-like-GENI initiavite? Vasilis probably can tell us something…?

Technical Programme, GA, 20 October 200629 Questions?
