3 The Bowl = Ideas Bowls are the foundation of any good sundae Bowls come in many shapes & sizes and are designed for a variety of purposes Author’s Purpose After you pick the right style of bowl, you still have to chose one that is the right size Genre

5 Pick your Authors Purpose Persuade The author is trying to make the reader agree with something important. The author wants to persuade you to see their point of view. Inform To inform is to teach a lesson or to show how to make something. You usually read something informational to learn more about a certain subject. Entertain To entertain is to tell a funny story or to tell what a person or place is like in an interesting or funny way. You usually read something entertaining for fun.

6 Determine the Authors Purpose Directions: Read each selection and choose whether it is entertaining, informational, or persuasive. 1. Recess is definitely too short. 11 The Scoops = Organization Traditional Sundaes include three delicious scoops just like any good piece of writing has three specific sections: Vanilla = Beginning Chocolate = Middle Vanilla Swirl = End

12 Parts of a piece of writing Introduction –Interest the reader and let the reader know what they are going to read about Body -Tell a story to the reader, explain something to the reader, or try to convince the reader Conclusion- wrap up why this piece of writing was written and leave the reader with something to think about.

13 Just-Right Toppings = Word Choice/Diction Use the right toppings at the right time to really make your Sundae pop. Try using words that create pictures, precise nouns and lively verbs.

16 The Mix-Ins = Voice What you mix into your Sundae says a lot about you. What you bring to the mix is what makes it interesting. ( Figurative Language) Make sure the audience knows your enthusiasm, involvement and feelings on the topic. ( Mood/Tone)

17 Mood/Tone Create the mood of the piece by using words that portray that mood you want the reader to be in. Mood=(Me) How the reader feels about the piece Tone=How the author feels about the piece Show the Sleeping in Settle trailer and the show the Sleeping in Settle “Re-Mix” trailer and talk about the difference in moods.

18 Literary Elements /Figurative Language Use literary elements to spice up your writing with expression and feeling; your writing will capture the hearts and minds of all! Any language that goes beyond the literal meaning of words in order to furnish new effects or fresh insights into an idea or a subject is figurative language.

20 Imagery Use the 5 senses to create a visual image in the readers mind. EX: Sobbing with her face buried in the pillow, she held on to her chest as if it was going to break a million little pieces when she got the news of her cheating boy friend.

21 Hyperbole An exaggerated statement used to heighten effect. EX: I am so hungry, I could eat a horse.

22 Alliteration Repeated consonant sounds occurring at the beginning of words or within words. EX: Sally sold seashells by the seashore.

23 Idioms An idiom or idiomatic expression refers to a construction or expression in one language that cannot be matched or directly translated word-for-word in another language. EX: The STAAR test was a piece of cake

24 Onomatopoeia The use of words that mimic sounds. EX: Hiss!

25 Metaphor A figure of speech which involves an implied comparison between two non-alike things. EX: My sons eyes are jewels!

26 Simile A figure of speech which involves a direct comparison between two unlike things using the words like or as. EX: Mark is as strong as an ox.

27 Personification A figure of speech which gives the qualities of a person an object or an idea. EX: The diamonds are jealous of your beauty!

28 The Spoon = Conventions Grab the spoon early and there may be nothing good to go after. Wait until the Sundae is all built to grab the spoon. CUPS (capitalization, usage/ subject – verb agreement, punctuation, spelling) are important but wait until everything else is in position before you start working on them.

29 Sweet Syrup = Sentence Fluency Syrup flows over ice cream, mix-ins and toppings to create a blend that is perfect. Sentences in your writing should flow and blend to create the perfect rhythm. Don’t get stuck on one syrup though – variety helps keep things new and fresh. Simple/ compound/ and complex sentences are needed in all pieces of writing. Try altering beginnings or sentence length to really make your writing syrupy sweet.

30 The Perfect Sundae=Publish With all of the pieces assembled it is time to enjoy a yummy treat! With all 6 traits used in your writing you will have a great piece to publish.
