Agenda 12/6 & 12/7 Highlighter Helper Set Theory Notes Go over Set Theory Worksheet Homework

Highlighter Helper If a problem is marked through by a highlighter it is wrong. You may try to correct the problems that are wrong, but you may not use your notes or each other. If you correct your mistakes you will earn ½ credit back.

Set Theory Today we will be taking notes a little differently. We will be making a “foldable” Hold your paper landscape. Fold both ends in so they meet in the middle, they should not overlap. On the left side divide & cut into 3 sections. On the right side divide & cut into 2 sections.

Set Theory Set – A collection of things with any number of items. 0, 1,2, 3, 4, 5, ….., infinite #. Sets are written in brackets { } with the elements listed between the symbols. Example: Set of letters that are vowels { a, e, i, o, u}

Set Theory Universal Set - U - the set that establishes the specific members that could be contained in a given set. U = {alphabet} the rectangle Element - - Each entry in a set. a is an element of the alphabet a {alphabet} a U If something is not an element we use:

Set Theory Practice: 1)V = {vowels} Is a V? _______ Is g V?______ 2)X = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} Is 4 X? _______ Is 5 X?______

Set Theory Subset - - a set of elements that are completely contained within another set. It can have none (null set) to all of the items from the set. Ex: A= {1,3,5} B = {1,2,3,4,5,6} A B

Set Theory We use Venn Diagrams to compare sets. Set A ={students wearing sneakers (tennis shoes)} Set B ={students wearing jeans in this class} Make a Venn Diagram U=class A={sneakers}B={jeans}

Set Theory Intersection - ∩ - the set of all elements that are in common between 2 or more sets. What is the same about the sets. Ex: students are wearing sneakers AND jeans U=class A={sneakers}B={jeans}

Set Theory Union – U –is the set that contains all of the elements of 2 or more sets. Ex: A U B (the union of set A and set B) EX: all students wearing sneakers OR jeans U=class A={sneakers}B={jeans}

Set Theory Complement – A`, A c, A – the set of elements in the universal set that are NOT in the given set. Our example would be students not wearing or

Homework Set Theory Worksheet 2 A snack to share with the class. (cookies, candy,etc, but no juice boxes or any other liquids – you may bring a water for yourself) http://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer/pdf/v enn.pdfhttp://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer/pdf/v enn.pdf
