Venn diagrams show relationships between two or more events. The rectangle represents the universal set and the circles represent events. A B U

A’, the complement of A is the shaded region outside the circle.

4. Subsets The subset (B  A) represents every element of B is also in A.

5. Intersection A B
A ∩ B U
The intersection (A ∩ B) represents both occurring. A and B.

6. Union A B
A υ B U
The union A υ B represents either A or B or both occurring. At least one of A or B.

7. Disjoint or Mutually Exclusive SetsB
Disjoint sets have no common elements ie. there is NO intersection.
