No Pencil or Paper Needed!
2
Make sure you know your multiplication tables up to 10
3
Multiplying by 2 is sometimes called “doubling” 12 x 2 = 24 62 x 2 = 124 567,987 x 2 = 1,135,974 (ok…that one was a bit hard!)
4
Dividing by 2 is sometimes called “halving” 12 ÷ 2 = 6 62 ÷ 2 = 31 127,988 ÷ 2 = 63,994
5
Multiplying by 10 is easy…just add a zero to the number. 9 x 10 = 90 63 x 10 = 630 398 x 10 = 3,980 11,456 x 10 = 114,560 This works no matter how large or small the number is!
6
To multiply any number by 5 all we need to do is to multiply the number by 10 (which is easy!) and divide the answer by 2 Let’s do 23 x 5 23 x 10 = 230 230 ÷ 2 = 115 Let’s try another…
7
72 x 10 = 720 720 ÷ 2 = 360 Let’s try one more…
8
120 x 10 = 1200 1200 ÷ 2 = 600 Easy…
9
15 x 13 (place larger number first) Add the first number (15) to the second digit of the second number (3) 15 + 3 = 18 Add a zero to the result to get 180 (multiply by 10) Multiply the second digits of each number 5 x 3 = 15 Add 180 + 15 = 195 Let’s try another one!
10
19 + 7 = 26 Add a zero to get 260 9 x 7 = 63 260 + 63 = 323 Let’s try a few more….
11
16 + 3 = 19 Add a zero to get 190 6 x 3 = 18 190 + 18 = 208
12
18 + 7 = 25 Add a zero to get 250 8 x 7 = 56 250 + 56 = 306
13
To multiply any two digit number by 11: (For this example we will use 54.) Separate the two digits in you mind (5__4). (Notice the hole between them!) Add the 5 and the 4 together (5 + 4 = 9) Put the resulting 9 in the hole 594. That's it! 11 x 54 = 594 Let’s try one…
14
Seperate the numbers (2 _ 7) Add the digits (2 + 7 = 9) Place the 9 in the hole (297) 27 x 11 = 297 Let’s do one more…
15
7 _ 1 7 + 1 = 8 71 x 11 = 781
16
The only thing tricky to remember is that if the result of the addition is greater than 9, you only put the "ones" digit in the hole and carry the "tens" digit from the addition. For example 11 x 57... 5__7... 5 + 7 = 12... put the 2 in the hole and add the 1 from the 12 to the 5 in to get 6 for a result of 627... 11 x 57 = 627
17
57 x 11 57 x 11 = 57 x (10 + 1) 57 x 10 = 570 57 x 1 = 57 570 + 57 = 627
18
Can you multiply a number by 10? Can you double a number? Can you add them together? Then you can multiply by 12!
19
To multiply a number by 12 you first multiply the number by 10 24 x 10 = 240 You then double the original number 24 x 2 = 48 Then add the results together 240 + 48 = 288 Let’s try one…
20
63 x 10 = 630 63 x 2 = 126 630 + 126 = 756 One more…
21
125 x 10 = 1250 125 x 2 = 250 1250 + 250 = 1500
22
For this example we will use 25 Take the "tens" part of the number (the 2) and add 1 to get 3 Multiply the original "tens" part of the number by the new number (2 x 3) Take the result (2 x 3 = 6) and put 25 behind it The answer is 625 Let’s try another one…
23
3 + 1 = 4 3 x 4 = 12 Place the 25 at the end to get 1225 Lets try another one…
24
4 + 1 = 5 4 x 5 = 20 Place the 25 at the end to get 2025 Let’s square 75…
25
7 + 1 = 8 7 x 8 = 56 Place the 25 at the end to get 5625 Simple…
26
2.95 6.95 7.80 1.90 4.75 1.25 3.95 29.55
27
33 77 88 22 55 11 44 30
28
If you don’t need an exact answer rounding the numbers can make the problem much easier. Say you are shopping and you want to see about how much you’ve spent…
29
$2.953 $6.957 $7.808 $1.902 $4.755 $1.251 $3.954 $29.55 30 By rounding the numbers you make the problem much easier and your answer is only off by $0.45 cents… not too bad!
