2 “I Am” Example I am the young son of a pilot who’s missing in action I wonder if he had time to bail out I hear my mother talking and crying on the phone I see the somber face uniformed visitor in the living room I am the son of a pilot who’s missing in action I pretend he’s home in the kitchen or in the yard I feel weak and alone I touch his shoes and his books on the self I worry that I’ll never know if he is dead or alive I cry when I realize that he won’t be home next week I am the young son of a pilot who’s missing in action I understand that he went to war I say he will come back I dream of his voice I try to imagine other pilots and soldiers in the jungle I hope they find my father I am the young son of a pilot who’s missing in action You must include specific details about the Asian immigrant experience. You will be graded on the details. Variety of colors for the pictures

6  Pass your Angel Island poem forward  Why do people come to the US?  What are the benefits for immigrants that come to the US?  What are the benefits for the country when immigrants arrive?  What are some complications of immigration?

7  Do you think that the US should allow any one to immigrate?  Who might the government not want to come into the country? Who might they want?  Should the US put a quota or limit on the number of people allowed to immigrate?

20  What are some positive attitudes or views toward immigrants depicted in the cartoons?  What are some of the negative views depicted in them?  What was difficult about analyzing the cartoons?  Based on these cartoons, what kind of reception do you think immigrants could expect to find when they came to the US?  In what ways do you think American attitudes toward immigrants around the turn of the century are similar to American attitudes today? In what ways are they different?
