CLC WRITING STRATEGIES Compound-Complex Sentences

Compound-Complex sentences are a combination of compound and complex sentences. They consist of two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Most compound-complex sentences you are going to write will consist of two independent clauses and one dependent clause.

Compound-Complex Sentences When you are ready, I will call the store, and we can talk to Reed. What is the dependent Clause? Name one of the independent clauses in this sentence. What is the other independent clause? Identify the coordinating conjunction, the subordinating conjunction, and the subjects and verbs in each clause.

Compound-Complex Sentences The example we just looked at had a coordinating conjunction in it. What is another way to join two independent clauses? Before the trick-or-treaters came, Jill made candied apples; they were delicious. We have a dependent clause followed by two independent clauses. The two independent clauses are joined by a semicolon. What is the dependent Clause? Name one of the independent clauses in this sentence. What is the other independent clause? Identify the subordinating conjunction, and the subjects and verbs in each clause.

Compound-Complex Sentences The process of making several kinds of compound- complex sentences consists of putting the formulas for compound sentences and complex sentences together in different combinations. Compound-complex sentences with three clauses may be sequenced in a number of ways.

Compound-Complex Sentences Can you design two formulas for compound-complex sentences in which the dependent clause comes first and is followed by two independent clauses? D,I,cI D,I;I After the party was over, Jean had a headache, so Paul cleaned up the house When Jennifer feels sad, she calls Chris; he cheers her up.

Compound-Complex Sentences You can also write a compound-complex sentence in which the dependent clause is placed between the two independent clauses. Jean had a headache after the party was over, so Paul cleaned up the house. Chad hates to sleep while his parents are awake, for he might miss something. Jennifer calls Chris whenever she feels sad; he cheers her up. The sky was gray when the volcano erupted; ash was falling everywhere. Notice in this kind of sentence, a comma and a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon are used between the dependent clause and the independent clause that follows it.

Compound-Complex Sentences This is the only time you will see a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon between a dependent clause and an independent clause. They are used here to join the second independent clause to the rest of the sentence in a compound-complex sentence just like they would be used to join the second independent clause to the rest of the sentence in a compound sentence.

Compound-Complex Sentences What formula can you create for a compound-complex sentence where the dependent clause comes between the two independent clauses. ID,cI ID;I Chad hates to sleep while his parents are awake, for he might miss something. The sky was gray when the volcano erupted; ash was failing everywhere.

Compound-Complex Sentences The dependent clause can also come after the two independent clauses in a compound-complex sentence Jean had a headache, so Paul cleaned up the house after the party was over. The boss made Pat a good offer, and she accepted as along as he gave her a travel allowance. The doctors were bust with the serious cases; the slightly wounded soldier quietly waited while they worked. Identify the dependent clause, independent clauses, the subordinating conjunction, and, if present, the coordinating conjunction.

Compound-Complex Sentences What formulas can we create for compound-complex sentences in which the dependent clause comes after both independent clauses? I,cID I;ID Jean had a headache, so Paul cleaned up the house after the party was over. The boss made Pat a good offer, and she accepted as along as he gave her a travel allowance. The doctors were bust with the serious cases; the slightly wounded soldier quietly waited while they worked.

Compound-Complex Sentences We have six formulas; two for sentences where the dependent clause is first, two for sentences where the dependent clause is second, and two for sentences in which the dependent clause comes third. The punctuation rules we learned for compound and complex sentences apply to compound-complex sentences as well.

Compound-Complex Sentences What are two ways of connecting two independent clauses? With Commas and Coordinating Conjunctions What do we use to join a dependent clause in the first position to an independent clause in the second position? A comma What are two ways of joining a dependent clause in the second position to an independent clause in the third position? With a comma and a coordinating conjunction
