What 2 improvements would you like to see in our Gifted/Talented Program? I would like to see parent G/T meetings held on campus at least 2 or 3 times per school year to evaluate student progress. I would like to see that the current G/T coordinator at our campus reach out to parents via email, phone or conference to inform of any pertinent information about the program. Source: 2014-2015 GT Parent Surveys Tonight represents the 5 th G/T Parent Night hosted just this year in addition to the campus and district showcases of student projects.

Identification Anyone can refer a student for services Need parental consent to test Referral August 24 th – November 1 st Testing December 1 st – 11 th Referral Student is referred for testing by teacher, parent, community member etc. Permission Parent/Guardian gives permission for child to be tested. Testing Student is assessed using district approved measures.

What Giftedness and Talents are identified by the State of Texas? “Gifted and talented student" means a child or youth who performs at, or shows the potential for performing at, a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who: 1. Exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area; 2. Possesses an unusual capacity for leadership ; or 3. Excels in a specific academic field. Added by Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 260, Sec. 1, eff. May 30, 1995.

G/T should not be a just a label It is not enough to simply identify a student as being Gifted/Talented. The purpose is to refer them for G/T services in their area of need The goal is for students to fully develop their giftedness into talent

Service Delivery An array of appropriately challenging learning experiences in each of the four (4) foundation curricular areas is provided for gifted/talented students in grades K- 12, and parents are informed of the opportunities (19 TAC §89.3). DIFFERENTIATION - modification of curriculum and instruction according to content, pacing, and/or product to meet unique student needs in the classroom

What is the difference between G/T and AP/PreAP Gifted and Talented Services for students who are identified by their district in any of the areas defined by the state Must qualify for services Advanced Placement (Pre AP) Accelerated curriculum to prepare students for college level work and assessments for college credit Open enrollment Our district Advanced Placement and PreAP classes are designated as a part of the gifted and talented program since they provide challenging experiences for students to excel in specific academic areas and are different from the standard curriculum.

Why is my child in class with “Non-G/T” students? Gifted/talented students are ensured opportunities to work together as a group, work with other students, and work independently during the school day as well as the entire school year as a direct result of gifted/talented service options (19 TAC §89.3(1)).

Service Delivery A continuum of learning experiences is provided that leads to the development of advanced-level products and/or performances such as those provided through the Texas Performance Standards Project (19 TAC §89.3(2))

SSAISD Advanced Level Products Students identified G/T K-12 Students participating in PAP/AP courses High school graduates who have participated in services for gifted/talented students will have produced products and performances of professional quality as part of their program services. What is the expectation? ALL Students receiving Gifted/Talented Services will complete an Advanced Product in 2016-2017 Products will be showcased at the SSAISD Advanced Academics Fairs

Advanced Academics STEM Showcase Students can submit individual or team projects (2 students per team) Top Entries from Middle School and High School in each sub fair will move on to represent SSAISD at ARASE Physical Sciences Chemistry, Computer Science & Math, Earth & Space, Engineering(Robotics), Physics Life Sciences Behavioral & Social Sciences, Botany, Environmental Sciences, Zoology Health Sciences Biochemistry, Medicine & Health, Microbiology

Advanced Academics Humanities Showcase Students can submit individual or group projects History Day (Individual or Group of up to 5) Young Fiction Writers (Individual) 90 Second Newbery (Individual or Group) Top Entries from Middle School and High School in each sub fair will move on to represent SSAISD History Day Paper (individual only), Documentary, Performance, Website, Exhibit 90 Second Newbery Video submissions to tell the story of a book in 90 seconds Young Fiction Writers 500-1500 word submission
