 Type I compound  Ionic compound where cation has only one possible charge  The metal is in the s block or one of the few in the d block which are Ag +, Au +, Zn 2+, and Cd 2+ Add to your periodic table  The cation (metal) is named first It gets to keep its name Ex. K + = Potassium or Na + = Sodium

 Type II compound  Ionic compound where cation has more than one possible charge  The metal in the d block  Cation is still named first and keeps it’s name  distinguish between the ions by using a Roman numeral in ( ) after the cations name to indicate its charge. Ex. Fe 2+ = Iron (II) Ex. Fe 3+ = Iron (III)

 Type I and Type II compounds  The anion (nonmetal) is named second  Change the ending to “-ide.” Ex. F -1 = Fluoride Ex. N -3 = Nitride  Polyatomic ions: keep their own names Ex. (SO 4 ) -2 = Sulfate Ex. (NO 3 ) -1 = Nitrate Y OU HAVE A LIST OF THESE ON THE BACK OF YOUR PERIODIC TABLE **A DD A MMONIUM WHICH IS AN ANION POLYATOMIC ION NH 4 +

 Practice – Give the name for the following compounds 1. KCl Potassium chloride 2. CaCO 3 Calcium carbonate 3. FeSO 4 Iron (II) sulfate 4. FeCl 3 Iron (III) chloride

 Practice – give the formula for the following compounds 1. Magnesium oxide MgO (Mg 2+ and O 2- ) 2. Lithium perchlorate LiClO 4 3. Colbalt (II) thicoyanate Co(SCN) 2 4. Colbalt (III) phosphate CoPO 4

 The Naming Race  Rules Work individually or with ONE other person. Number your papers 1-15 (EVERYBODY needs a paper). First person(s) to turn in their paper 100% correct wins… 1 st place = 5 extra credit points 2 nd place = 3 extra credit points 3 rd place = 1 extra credit point

Name for the compound that is made of… 1) Lead 2+ and sulfate 2) Sodium and chlorate 3) Calcium and fluorine 4) Gold and chlorine Name for the chemical formula… 5) FeCl 3 6) Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 7) NH 4 NO 3 8) Al(OH) 3 9) CuC 2 H 3 O 2 10) Fe 2 O 3 The formula for the compounds… 11) Ammonium phosphate 12) Sodium sulfite 13) Mercury (I) oxide 14) Copper (II) sulfate 15) Tin (IV) phosphite
