AFS Decommissioning Overview Andy Romero Core Computing Division
2
Project Goal By May 1, 2016: Eliminate all of the remaining dependencies Fermilab has on the AFS Service. Why ? Low capacity, Low performance … high annual maintenance cost Client software has been hard to support (Window / Mac) The last straw …. Support is no longer available
3
Remaining Dependencies on AFS User Home Directories Non-Home Directory AFS volumes
4
User Home Directories During late March and throughout most of April we will be migrating batches of user home directories FROM: The AFS based Unix Home Directory Service TO: The NAS based Unix Home Directory Service AFS based Home Directories Special non-standard, add-on AFS client software required /afs/fnal.gov/files/home/room3/bob /afs/fnal.gov/files/home/room1/kjsmith NAS based Home Directories Linux : built-in NFS client MacOS and Windows: built-in SMB client
5
NAS based Unix Home Directory Service Paths (examples) Supported Linux Clusters (gpcf / fnalu ): /nashome/b/bob /nashome/k/kjsmith Linux Personal Workstations NFSv4-Krb protocol Mount homesrv01.fnal.gov:/home AS /nashome MacOS Mount: smb://homesrv01.fnal.gov/home-unix Navigate to your home directory: ( example: b/bob ) Windows Mount: \\homesrv01\home-unix\\homesrv01\home-unix Navigate to your home directory: ( example: b\bob )
6
Home Directory Migration (What do you need to do) Real AFS users Who Scientists who actively use Linux based computing facilities Other people who actively use their AFS home directory You need to know exactly when your home directory will be migrated What to do on your home directory migration day What to do after you finish watching this overview presentation Watch the presentations under the link: AFS Home Directory Migration Details on the AFS Migration Web Page: http://computing.fnal.gov/nasan/afs-mig/http://computing.fnal.gov/nasan/afs-mig/
7
Home Directory Migration (What do you need to do) Former AFS users, Occasional AFS users, Non AFS Users Who Someone who has at some time in the past used their AFS home directory Someone who occasionally uses their AFS home directory for general file storage; but, who does not really depend on it. Someone who has no idea what AFS is What you should do You now know where your AFS home directory content will be migrated to if you ever need it. Finish watching this presentation

Non-Home Directory AFS volumes /afs/fnal.gov/files/cadwww /afs/fnal.gov/files/code /afs/fnal.gov/files/data /afs/fnal.gov/files/docs /afs/fnal.gov/files/expwww /afs/fnal.gov/files/products /afs/fnal.gov/files/public /afs/fnal.gov/files/reports /afs/fnal.gov/files/scratch /afs/fnal.gov/files/tww /afs/fnal.gov/files/web /afs/fnal.gov/files/wwwdocs /afs/fnal.gov/exp /afs/fnal.gov/products /afs/fnal.gov/ups /afs/fnal.gov/admin Etc etc etc …..

Non-Home Directory AFS volumes Value of Non-Home Directory AFS volumes Many meetings with experiment liaisons Our current opinion: “All Remaining Non-Home Directory AFS volumes that have value have been identified” Our current opinion could be wrong If you know of a directory or file in the Fermilab AFS tree that is relevant to a current lab activity, project, process Simply submit a Service Desk Ticket (ASAP !) … We will work with you and provide a custom migration solution Sample Ticket The following path is still actively used: /afs/fnal.gov/files/data/e123 Our Default action for Non-Home Directory AFS volumes All areas which are not flagged (via service desk ticket) as being relevant to a current activity will be archived Nothing will be deleted !! It will be possible to have archived data re-activated if it is needed in the future
