Parquetry is very similar, but not the same as marquetry. Pieces of veneer or wood repeating geometric shapes, forming tiling patterns such as checker board or brickwork patterns or fans. most commonly seen in floors. J. Byrne 2012 1

Parquetry Fan Mark out the Ellipse and divide into segments Cut out triangles of Veneers & scorch one edge of each Starting with a scorched edge fit the triangles into the ellipse. Chop out the scallops, fit another veneer then trim to shape. J. Byrne 2012 3

Parquet Flooring Nowadays any kind of woodblock floor pattern can be called “parquet flooring” Parquet flooring originated in France 1684 Traditionally made from solid blocks of hardwoods, laid in geometric patterns such as squares, triangular or lozenge designs. Inlay is the insertion of thin pieces of wood, stringing, ivory, copper brass etc., into a solid base. Bandings are available as strips of patterns made up from side grain sections of coloured hardwoods. J. Byrne 2012 10

Bandings Walnut, Ebony, Beech, Ramin, Tulipwood, Rosewood & Boxwood are a few species of timber used. The strips are approx. the same thickness as knife cut veneers and are produced in various widths. They can be taped together with other veneers for pressing or inlaid afterwards by cutting a groove into the wood. J. Byrne 2012 11
