Modifying a cake recipe Year 8 FOOD TECHNOLOGY.

Lesson Objectives: By the end of this lesson you will Understand what modification of a recipe means. Work within a team to produce a modified batch of fairy cakes. Evaluated each modification FOOD TECHNOLOGY.

Basic Cake Recipe 75g self raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 50g caster sugar 50g margarine 1 egg FOOD TECHNOLOGY.

Modification means: “ A partial alteration “ Modification can be the addition of ingredients, the removal or the replacement of ingredients. FOOD TECHNOLOGY.

We will be using the following modifications: Change of colour : cocoa powder, food colouring, Change of taste: Vanilla essence, Change of Texture:mixed dried fruit, glace cherries FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Food Technology Why do we need to change the recipe? Modifying the cake recipe can make the cakes more healthy Give a different taste Give a different appearance How can we change the recipe? Find alternative healthier ingredients Add extra ingredients Remove ingredients FOOD TECHNOLOGY

First you need to split into groups of 4/5 For this lesson, we will be adding an ingredient to modify the recipe One person from the team will select a card Once you have your extra ingredient, you may start. Food Technology

Remember personal hygiene Remember to put ovens on first. Each member of the team will have a job to do – collecting equipment, mixing ingredients, - spooning mixture in cases, washing up, - cleaning work areas Food Technology

When your cakes are cooled, put them on the paper plate with the correct label Cut 6 cakes into quarters. Each team will taste their cakes and then when asked to do so, move clockwise round each of the tables Food Technology
